Earth Day 2013

Earth Day 2013 by DJ Free Weed   (Portland)

Portland’s Gnar Tapes just put out a Earth day mix by the always great Free Weed, who released a really good LP a couple months ago. This release, however, differs from the usual simple lo-fi garage pop songs that he usually puts out.  On Earth Day 2013Free Weed makes 90′s influenced minimal tracks that are intended to for relaxation and mediation( his words not mine). These tracks cause reflective spacey moods compatible with Earth day and other upcoming holidays.@ecarlblom

Halfling EP

202325787-1Halfling EP by The Sifters   (New York, NY)

I was surprised to find a group like this relatively unknown in my city. The Sifters are a trio from New York state that bring together world music, pop, and indie-folk to create an eclectic sound not commonly heard in the DIY scene, simply because the arrangements are just more intelligent than we’re used to hearing at our local Brooklyn haunts. A band like this could be good to keep all these buzz bands in check because they make it clear how totally possible it is to release well-produced and written music independently. Although they certainly wear their influences way out on their sleeves (Grizzly Bear, Andrew Bird, Sufjan Stevens), this is a group with an unquenchable thirst and undoubtedly will progress towards their own sound in due time. I’d be very surprised if I don’t start seeing this name around town more as people get hip to what The Sifters have to offer. Now go download this 8 song album for FREE! Loving You Down

artworks-000040802928-l98bv6-t500x500Loving You Down by Bells Atlas   (Oakland, CA)

Emerging from the culturally and musically diverse Oakland/Berkeley, California comes afro/indie-soul group Bells Atlas. Equal parts r&b, soul, pop, and alternative, the band comfortably displays a knack for incorporating a wide variety of influences all the while creating an original, accessible sound. Nigerian-American singer Sandra Lawson-Ndu commands song after song with rhythmic vocals and a Badu-like demeanor that could promptly put any new listener straight into a trance. The sound, fully developed with help from band member multi-instrumentalists Derek Barber, Geneva Harrison, and Doug Stuart, is very open and percussive. Supporting melodies are cleverly designated to vibraphone and backup harmonies rather than the more common piano or guitar riff. I expect a broad demographic to pick up on Bells Atlas soon, a crowd ranging from fans of The Dirty Projectors to Jill Scott to Tune-Yards. @thinknotsleep

Sinking With The Sun

Busy Busy Busy EP by Busy Busy Busy   (Brooklyn, New York)

There is something so soothing about Busy Busy Busy’s ‘Sinking With The Sun’. It reminds me of something the would play in the start of a film. The sun setting on the protagonists shadowy face, wind blowing, dust flying.  I was impressed by the billowy vocals, the calm guitars and the commanding drums. Maybe I won’t be listening to this at the beginning of the movie but, a moonlit rooftop would do. Possibly even better. Lovecat
