Ragers & Rockshows [5.17.13]

tweens

I went to Pianos on a Wednesday, May 8th to see LODRO, Total Slacker, TWEENS, and Drowners, but since it was at capacity I couldn’t get in until Total Slacker finished so I only really ended up seeing TWEENS and a couple minutes of Drowners. Tweens are a trashy pop three-piece consisting of the members BB tween, Jerri queen, Dabney teen. They’re from Cincinnati, OH and had just opened for The Breeders a couple nights before. One of my pink haired girlfriends/dance partners told me that some dude went into a record store in Cincinnati and asked the dude working there what band from Cincinnati he thought should open for The Breeders at their Webster Hall show, and he said Tweens. I’m not sure how true that is, but it’s a pretty cool story. They’re super punky boppy and poppy and had this one cool slower instrumental song I really liked.

On Thursday 5/9 I went to the 1.21 Gigawatts Issue 5 release party @ 285 Kent with Chappo, Dead Stars, Slonk Donkerson, Jangula and Heeny. The first 100 people in there got cool free Gigawatts pins. It was also Slonk Donkerson’s Cassette Release for their EP Watching Every Channel at Once. I dragged my poor gimpy boyfriend along with me who had sprained his ankle the week before while he was playing at 285 Kent. Good thing there was some weird computer chair with wheels on it to push him around in or else I wouldn’t have had any fun. That’s not true…it’s hard not to have fun while Slonk Donkerson are playing. They sound very fresh and genuine, like they don’t really give a fuck and get sweaty and have a member who sort of head bangs like a metalhead even though they’re not even remotely close to being metal. Dead Stars were also a lot of fun and did a good cover of a Nirvana classic. Check out the new issue of 1.21 Gigawatts HERE.

Kramer Presents….Milk Dick, Lunchbox, Sharkmuffin and The Lesbians was on Friday May 10th @ Muchmore’s. I gave free tarot card readings near the door and there was this super old television Kramer and me found on the street that only plays static and Justin Timberlake sometimes sat  in the window of Muchmore’s that had a cardboard cutout that said ‘Kramer Presents’ taped onto it. It smelt a little funny.

Screen shot 2013-05-16 at 3.39.13 PM

The Lesbians sound like if the first lineup of Pink Floyd decided to turn into a funk band and their bass player looks like she’s dating every other member of the band. Milk Dick are still one of my all time favorite Brooklyn bands. They’re funny and simple, just like their band name.

The 3rd issue of Fuck, New York also came out at this show, which you can read HERE

I happen to live a few blocks away from Muchmore’s, and sometimes I like to ride my razor scooter up and down Havermyer ave, so I ended up listening to the band Dog Water Saturday night (5/11) while seeing how many figure 8s I could make with my scooter before I got dizzy. Listening to music outside of Muchmore’s is actually a really nice experience. Dog Water is good scootering music.

There was a sweet mother’s day Backyard BBQ at 94 Evergreen on Sunday May 12th with Girl Toy, Sharkmuffin, Knucklewagon (from Boston), and Designer (from Boston). Girl Toy took full advantage of moms getting in for free and Beatrice brought her mom (all the way from London!!). There was a trash can fire, it was super windy, and there were hot dogs. The End.

Ragers & Rockshows [5.3.13]

tourvan

There was so much love at the belated Hippy, Lunchbox, Haybaby, Sharkmuffin SXSW tour comeback show @ Haybaby Catfarm on Saturday April 27th. There were communal boxes of wine, scotch, and a friendly lion looking bunny  in the backyard. We even attempted to have a pre-show BBQ. It was Sharkmuffin’s She-Gods of Champagne Valley EP release party, and the premiere of the first issue of the show-ly, play-billesque zine, Fuck, New York!

After spending so much time with this lovely batch of degenerates & hippies in March (on my extended absence from DINGUS), it was especially hard to return to reality, which is partially the reason why I haven’t been raging that hard. Well, that isn’t true. It’s more like the post-tour depression held on for a while, so I lacked the inspiration and motivation to write about anything since. But that is no longer! This was one of those rejuvenating shows that makes you want them to happen every single day & attempt to share the energy of those amazing Brooklyn DIY experiences with all of you! yay!

Noteworthy moments

There was a dude who kept yelling ‘SLACK GAZE’ during the Haybaby set.

The frontman of Lunchbox stripped down to his girlfriend’s booty shorts he had been using as underwear for a week.

Sharkmuffin still can’t get through a set without awkwardly insulting the audience.

Jenny from Hippy is the most bodacious bass babe ever and Hippy Lifestyle is my spring/summer 2013 anthem.

deli ava luna

I was working behind the shoe desk during The Deli Magazine showcase at Brooklyn Bowl with Ava Luna, Modern Rivals, The Ugly Club, and Vensaire this past Tuesday 4/30. Natalie, the great mind behind Toaster Music, gave me the idea awhile back to illustrate the sound and energy of a live show through doodles. This was applied to this particular show because I couldn’t actually see the show first hand, feeling like a caged tiger cleaning bowling shoes.

Also, being a few days after the event, without the actual visual memory of the performance, I could not really write an accurate review of the first 3 bands since they all blended together in this sort of Animal Collective-influenced mesh, so these illustrations express more of the intricacies of the energy they were giving off in the moment. Observe below.

Also, while running baskets filled with shoes I caught a glimpse of the white chick in Ava Luna who stands in the middle with the telecaster and she had the most amazing leggings on that I had ever seen. They were like the colors of spring flowers and the cosmos melting together. So sweet.

R & R: The Live Sitrep [1.15.13]

Monday (1/7) @ Pianos was Bedfellows, Sharkmuffin & Indyans. Bedfellows and Indyans both have a fresh take on ’80s nostalgic pop music in the vein of The Cure and Joy Division. Indyans have a cute charismatic frontman and Bedfellows have an awesome multitasking keyboard/guitarist. Definitely worth checking out!

Thursday (1/10) I caught a kick-ass show with Flagland, Lunchbox and Vulture Shit at Spike Hill. Like kids actually moving around and crowd surfing and asking for encores kind of kick-ass. I didn’t really see much of Vulture Shit, but their name is Vulture Shit and that alone makes me want to check them out again. I know, I suck Lunchbox’s clit all the time, but that’s only because they’re a great live band and they keep getting better and more sweaty. Who doesn’t love watching a bunch of sweaty boys jump around? Flagland made me want to go home and listen to Alkaline Trio but then when I did, I wasn’t satisfied because I just wanted to see more Flagland. Their frontman seems like a sarcastic dickhead, which made me love them more because I’m a typical girl who falls all over dicky guys who play guitar and have bleach blond hair. <3

Sunday morning (1/13) I saw Widowspeak & DIIV perform at Brooklyn Bowl for a crowd of small children (yes, I’m serious).  They were also interviewed by an audience of children that ranged in age from 3 to 10. The three songs Widowspeak and DIIV performed separately were great, that’s a given. Widowspeak reminds me of Mazzie Star, and DIIV especially intrigued the audience, which actually surprised me because let’s be honest: they look like a bunch of weirdos. The questions the kids asked were hilarious though. They were really interested in how old everyone was. One girl asked DIIV if they were still in high school. When another kid asked if they went to college, the host begged “just say yes! just say yes!” but Cole can’t tell a lie and told the kids he didn’t finish school and to not go to college. Moral of the story: don’t go to college. When one little girl asked (cue adorable kindergartener impression) “How did you learn to play this rock n’ roll music?” Cole answered simply “It’s just natural.”

Sunday evening was a Sugar Mama Bk Presents show at Big Snow Buffalo Lodge with Sharkmuffin, Lunchbox, Sic Tic and Vivienne Eastwood. I only want to talk about how awesome Sic Tic is. This was their first show with their new drummer, this blonde babe who held it down really well. They have an amazing saxophone player and an amazing guitarist who has my favorite “waaaooowwwwww” scream of 2013. They’re a great rock n’ roll band that will refresh your faith in simple instrumentation, song structure and catchy guitar riffs.

Previews—————————————-

On Thursday (1/17), 1.21 Gigawatts and our own Leah Lovecat are putting on a show at Legion Bar with Newport Reds, Milk Dick, Honduras, and Ch!nch!la. It’s $5, 21+ and the show starts @ 8:30pm. It’ll be the best packed & sweaty time of your life, as always.

Friday is going to be crazy! Like entering a cheese-ball contest, winning, and not puking crazy.  Like drinking a whole bottle of maple syrup crazy. Like how you felt after seeing that three-way kiss on the real world when you were 9 years old crazy.

Here we go!  Friday the 18th:::::

(In Bushwack)

At Shea Stadium you can check out Roomrunner, Bambara, Advaeta, Big Ups and Peopling. Doors at 8, first band goes on at 9, it’s $8 and Mila Matveeva’s birthday. I don’t know who that is, but go say Happy Birthday to him or her.

Big Snow Buffalo Lodge is where Leapling is celebrating their 10″ Record Release with Zula & Xenia Rubinos. DJ Gabe D’Amico will be on at 9PM. Doors @ 9PM, $7. ALL AGES.

(The infamous Kent Ave strip)

At 285 Kent is Total Slacker, Team Spirit (members of Passion Pit), Darlings, The Indecent and a TEEN DJ set! Also $8, all ages, with the first band going on at 8:45.

To the right of 285 (while you’re facing the water smoking a cigarette and Todd P is telling you to move down the block) is Ran Tea House where there will be the third installment of the CONNECT: Explorations In Electronic Psychedelia party series with RIOUX, Heathered Pearls, Certain Creatures, and Prism House. There will also be a sculpture installation courtesy of the great Katherine Sullivan. Doors @ 10PM.

To the left of 285 is Glasslands Gallery where there will be performances by GRINGO STAR, BACKWORDS, AND RADICAL DADS! 21+. Doors at 8:30 and the show will be over earlyish (11:30), so you can check out the other shows on the block!

I’m unfortunately going to be stuck playing with Beyonce’s backing band at Sullivan Hall this Friday. So party it up for me!!

Saturday (1/19) isn’t as cream-your-pants exciting, so if you’re running on empty or can’t get rid of your hangover you should check out Louisiana Purchasing Presents…The Meaning of Life, The Bear Romantic, Pow Wow! & Sharkmuffin @ Legion Bar instead of running around to 5 different shows in one night. $5. Doors at 8PM.

Ragers & Rock Shows: Weekend DIY Show Preview [11.15.12]

Due to this apocalyptic weather & a weird plague-esque sickness that I haven’t been able to kick for 2 weeks, I unfortunately couldn’t make it to any shows last week, and I unfortunately have to work most of the weekend, so I decided to revamp Ragers & Rock Shows to that you all can party as hard as possible for me.

The show you absolutely can’t miss this weekend is on Sunday (11/18) at Legion Bar with Turnip King, Hay Baby, Big Muff, & Marlon Rando for $5. The catch is you have to get there early around 8PM to witness the return to the stage of the great Marlon Rando! With a new revamped line-up & more mature sound, I’m sure these mid-fi boppers will really blow you away with their swinging guitar riffs & sweet melodies.

Turnip King are also a great band to see live thanks to the wide variety of their sound pallet that you can zone out to.. I’ve never seen Hay Baby or Big Muff, but I’ve heard really good things from both. Mark your calendars!!

On Friday  (11/16) at 285 Kent for $10 is Naomi Punk, G Green, Parquet Courts, & Psychic Blood. I almost saw Parquet Courts once with Liquor Store, but like that one cheesy 90s pop song my mother would always annoyingly sing quote says- almost doesn’t count.

At The Greenpoint Gallery on Friday for FREE is Eleanor, Milk Dick, Weather Balloons, and Kamehameha (members f Eleanor + Jared Dancler). Milk Dick is one of my favorites with their light garage tunes, bubble-gum blowing drummer & funny frontman.

Ragers & Rock Shows: The Live Sitrep [10.23.12]

Monday (10/15) Yellow Dogs, The Immaculates and Habibi were at Brooklyn Bowl. Yellow Dogs are the most band-of-thieves looking Iranian bunch. Their sound is very refreshing and reminds me of a bunch of poppy post-punk band from the UK I listened to when I was in middle school in the early 2000s. The boys of The Immaculates were looking sharp as usual, and I didn’t actually see Habibi, except for one of their members face-down asleep in the green room earlier in the evening. Hope she’s doing better now…

CMJ felt like any other week to me honestly, except it was more socially acceptable for me start drinking before 5PM. On Tuesday I went to pick up my badge, since I managed to get my shitty punk band, Sharkmuffin, a showcase at Muchmore’s. My badges only use the entire week seemed to be to get a ton of picture likes on Facebook and the ability to pretend I was still an NYU student hanging out in the Kimmel Center. I saw a decent panel Tuesday on the state of DIY music that included Krissy Krissy as a speaker. I don’t want to knock her as a DIY musician or anything, but her story basically was that some popular rapper’s former manager discovered her in a karaoke bar in Bushwick, and now she has a video on MTV. Her point though was that this wasn’t her first album she’s recorded, it was her 9th, so she did work her ass off for it, and it is a self-released album. But it still apparently takes a lot of luck and a manager with a lot of connections to get on MTV as a ‘DIY artist’.

I didn’t catch any shows Tuesday, but I went to an all night keg party at 285 Kent and then ended up at The Commodore playing the Gilligan’s Island pinball machine til 4. There’s free pinball at The Commodore everyone.

I woke up Wednesday (10/17) and decided to go to Webster Hall thinking that The Denzels were playing at 4:30 at the Surprise Attack showcase in The Marlin Room, but I misread the band name and ended up seeing The Danvilles. This turned out to be a wonderful mistake. They were a great southern rock band that did a great cover of a cramps song and inspired me to immediately go buy some bourbon that I carried around in an iced coffee cup for the rest of the evening.

After that I went to the Camper’s Rule showcase at Muchmore’s with Sharkmuffin, Indian Rebound, Quiet Loudly, Backwords, and Gunfight! It goes without saying that my shitty punk band, Sharkmuffin, was awesome. I was glad to hear that the boys in Indian Rebound are teenagers because they kept fucking with me like they were teenagers. They’re sweet kids though and they write good poppy music that also reminds me of early 2000s pop post-punk from the UK like Yellow Dogs. Is that a thing now or something? I missed Quiet Loudly, Backwords, and Gunfight! because I went back to my apartment to get more of my bourbon to share with someone who I now know was most likely underage. Lol, oops.

On Thursday afternoon (10/18) before I saw Popstrangers at Cameo Gallery, and Backwords, Spanish Prisoners, and The Denzels at Legion Bar, I had a lovely brunch with Miss Leah Lovecat at Egg. We drew on the table and drank mimosas. All the way from New Zealand, Popstrangers killed it with their noise grunge pop. I was really into their catchy bass lines. Then I saw Backwords for real at Legion Bar. They seemed like a very happy band that had a lot of fun psychedelic trips together at summer camp. I missed most of Spanish Prisoners because I was off getting chex mix, but they have a track called guitar dream, which is pretty sweet. The Denzels were great. I love bands with bigger-than-your-average-boney-hipster scruffy men with mustaches and telecasters. I really enjoyed their lead guitar lines and their death by audio fuzz war pedal.

On Friday (10/18) I saw J. Rambo’s unofficial CMJ showcase at Cheap Storage with King Tuff, Total Slacker, Habibi, Royal Baths, and Turnip King. I feel like Cheap Storage is cursed, because all of my friends’ multiple current and ex-lovers seem to flock there and create this weird vibe by awkwardly running into each other in all the awkward crevices that this place contains. It also has a really charming piss staircase in the left corner of the roof.

Turnip King opened the show. The guitarist on the left side of the stage had a really cool pick guard design & the dream catcher hanging off his telecaster. They have a good balance of ethereal loose reverbed-out songs and more basic pop structured ones. Royal Baths was my favorite band I saw all week. I think I drunk texted everyone I know about how good they were. I haven’t seen them since Leslie (formerly of the band Friends) joined the band. The attitude of her voice and her facial expressions were perfectly sexily off-putting. I usually don’t like making other band comparisons but they’re sort of like if The Velvet Underground and The White Stripes had a baby or if Jack White & Alison Mosshart’s band The Dead Weather was more psych influenced. I was kind of creepily turned on the whole time. Habibi was cool, the girl I saw sleeping earlier in the week was alright if you were wondering. This was Total Slacker’s first show since their drummer, Terence Connor sadly passed away October 1st. Ross Condor, their original drummer took over. Their 2nd guitarist, Tassy, has the best head movements and dance moves. Their bassist Emily had an awesome leather skirt. By the time King Tuff started Cheap Storage was hot, stuffy, and really sweaty, so I sang along on the roof for a few of their songs. The crowed and the pit were crazy and like this one headline stated it proved “sketchy Brooklyn venues are the place to be.”

Saturday (10/20) at Muchmore’s was The Dingus/TheSnake showcase. My favorites were Flora & Lil Kids. Flora came all the way from Israel and took an awesome picture of me on the couch. Lil Kids projected erotic images onto the celing and were the most energetic project I saw all week.  @SugarMamaBK

Ragers & Rock Shows: The Live Sitrep [10.09.12]

The only event I went to this week was the Tribute to Terence Connor, the drummer from Total Slacker, on Saturday at Cheap Storage, who sadly passed away in a hit-and-run accident last Monday morning. It was a celebration of his life and amazing spirit, that included DJ sets by Total Slacker, Prince Rama, DOM, Jenn Pelly, Cool Serbia, and Weird Rivers. All the donations at the door and bar went to Terence’s family.

This unexpected loss has been heartbreaking for everyone in the Brooklyn music family, and I asked my friend Greg Timmes, a former member of Total Slacker, and a very close friend of Terence’s to write something in his memory:

The untimely loss of Terence Connor, drummer of Brooklyn band – Total Slacker, devastated a community on Monday, October 1st. We were able to come together in his memory while the soft glow of Thursday’s candlelit vigil warmed our broken hearts. If I could cast a spell or perform a miracle to bring him back I would. The flag has flown at half-mast all week as a procession of nobleman and angels marched from borough to borough in his honor. He is being canonized into sainthood for the lives he touched and the perfection he achieved.

As I awake from an unbalanced coma of sobriety and inebriation in my own juvenile attempt to cope with the loss of a friend, I know that he will not be forgotten as we all are forced to face the reality of our own lives. A carton of cigarettes and several cases of beer later, I feel he was with me through it all and that he will always be there. We have strive to be more like Terence – to be filled with all that is good, to be open to any opportunity put in front of us, and to love everyone we come in contact with. There is beauty in the fact that we all came together and I am grateful to have people to support me during such a tragic time. @Sugarmamabk

Ragers & Rock Shows: The Live Sitrep [09.25.12]

The best show I went to this week was at the new out door venue The Well in Bushwick, Brooklyn on Saturday (9/22) with Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, and K-Holes, presented by Panache. I didn’t see too much of K-Holes since I was on one of the 3 giant beer lines inside. The Well is insane, it must hold around 2,000 people and it felt like I was at an all day outdoor festival, even though it was just a one night thing. The beers are kind of expensive for Bushwick at $6, but  the guy at the Village Voice table made up for it by giving me a giant pack of temporary tattoos and bottle opener key chains shaped like sharks.

Thee Oh Sees are my absolute favorite band to see live. Last time I saw them in February at 285 Kent I kept getting smashed into the stage until I finally just had to dance behind guitarist/singer, John Dwyer, because my shins were so bruised. At that point my only fear was that the PA speaker was going to fall on me and R. Stevie Moore who happened to be standing next to me.

Thee Oh Sees perform like they’re possessed by evil oomph lompas running around in circles on a candy land board game, wreaking havoc throwing bricks through windows and spray painting walls. They sing these catchy singable hooks with sideways smiles and wide eyes in fuzzy driving/dreamy jams that can go on forever. Dwyer looked like some kind of amphibian when he put his pick in his mouth and flicked it around with his tongue while doing one finger picking part. He also hoots like a monkey, and has a polite, old timely, playful, rock n roll stage personality that’s very charming.

It started raining during the Ty Segall band’s set, which gave it this cool primal atmosphere, along with cooling everyone off who I had been smashed up against up in front for the whole show. We were mainly dancing the ‘mashed potato,’ which seems to be in between moshing and dancing, where everyone is just smooching each other, swaying back and forth, and falling down. One guy crowd surfing fell head first over the barricade, he got up thankfully, and Ty was nice enough to stop the show and call for a medic. “Just to be clear…we need a medic.” Then we all applauded for the medic. The band did 2 funny covers, one of Sweet Home Alabama, and another, the first song of the encore, The End by The Doors. Ty’s performances of the tracks off their most recent album, Slaughterhouse, were really powerful. Experiencing them live with the whole band gives it that extra intensity. Ty’s band shares with Thee Oh Sees the aspect of seeming like they’re possessed with something and while performing their songs they are also fighting them.

The whole show replenished my faith that rock n roll will never die. Even if right now it seems that these two bands are carrying the whole scene on their backs, there will be more garage bands that can get to this point of being able to sell out a venues of this capacity. And that makes me so fucking excited.

Thursday (9/20) night at Santos Party House I saw the Ssion record release show put on by Popgun Presents. They painted a perfect picture of an internet sensation punk/electronic project with an amazing live show. Their lineup included a couple buff “ladies” that had synchronized dance moves and matching outfits who the frontman pushed around randomly. They also had an elegantly dressed transvestite back up singer. Their flamboyant frontman had some memorable lines, such as “Sometimes I wake up in the morning and think ‘goddess, is this real?’ And then I check the internet and it is!” He crowd surfed at the end of the set and afterwards said “If anyone got pictures or videos of that, you better go and fucking blog about it.” Their cover of Hole’s Credit in the Straight World is super spaced out, a heroin chic disco track that I’m pretty in love with.

Later that night I went to Ran Tea House to catch Oberhofer’s set. Next door at 285 Kent was the sold out Lightening Bolt show. While I was standing outside and the door to 285 was opened it felt like I was hit in the face with a wall of sound. I heard they blew a fuse too, which is pretty hardcore. It’s too bad I can’t be at three places at once, because I would have loved to be at 285, at Santos, and seeing the entire lineup at Ran Tea House, which included Total Slacker, Darlings,  Mathew Molnar of Friends new band- Kissing is a Crime, and Lazyeyes.

But anyway, Oberhofer’s set was sweet. It started with frontman and bandleader, Brad Oberhofer, riding on the shoulders of J. Rambo while playing a wireless guitar to the stage. Brad has a magnetic stage presence and he sort of looks as if one of the Jonas brothers rejected god, ran away from home, and started a rock band. He writes songs that you feel like you’ve heard before but are still fresh that you want to sing along too. Lots of oooo-ooooing.

Friday (9/21) was the 20th show presented by Dingus & The Snake Records at Free Candy. My favorite band of the evening was Happy Lives. Their drummer quit that morning because he got a job at UPS, and the sound guy somehow did a miraculous job at filling in on some of the songs. The two piece mixed it up with the guitarist also filling in on drums and using a backing track for the guitar parts. They had one amazing track that was stripped down with just bass & vocals.

After that amazing show at The Well on Saturday, I went to Muchmore’s and caught Life Sized Maps and Heaven’s Gate. If you haven’t checked out Life Size Maps EP yet, you really need to. I loved Heaven’s Gate. Their front woman reminded me of Grace Slick but with a lot more reverb.

After that, with sparklers in hand that some random guy gave to me, I headed to Brooklyn Bowl for the Jonathan Toubin hosted Soul Clap Dance off after party. Ty Segall DJ’d mostly vintage R&B/Soul tracks. There was a dance competition judged by members of the Ty Segall band and Thee Oh Sees. Other judges included the founder of Pitchfork, Ryan Schrieber, and the founder of Panache Booking, Michelle Cable. Things got a little rowdy when some guy wouldn’t move out of the way during the dance competition for the judges to see, and he ended up getting kicked out. Poor bro.

On Sunday (9/23), as burned out from the weekend as I was, I still made it out to Shea Stadium to see Desert Sharks and Slothrust. The singer/bassist of Desert Sharks had a great riot grrrlesque voice and a great side pony tail. Slothrust is a power trio that incorporates great bluesy riffs while the frontwoman wails with her deep vocals. She somehow makes the all kids scream ‘SLAAAAYYYYERRRRR!!!’

Thrashin

Thrashin by Total Slacker   (Brooklyn, NY)

Brooklyn locals, Total Slacker, have dug the trench and prepared for the defensive.  And, in a scene so saturated, so lose and misleading, entrenchment is really the smartest move.  Monopolize your sound, tune if finely like a craftsman and let them come to you.  Thrashin is not what you would think.  This somber three track infection is an intelligent rehearsal of an immature sound, a combination sure to entertain and dismiss the mind.  Dingus
