Single Release: Away {Julia Losfelt}

artworks-000048451753-gi0jpc-t500x500‘Away’ by Julia Losfelt   (Paris, France) *

Singer, Julia Losfelt, enjoys the extreme luxury of being partners, in multiple ways, with Parisian producer Andrea.  However, her latest track, ‘Away‘, is a product composed all her own.  You can sense that their minds share some intrinsic audio link, though now that Losfelt has put her stamp on something pure, it’s only upon examination that you begin to take note of the crucial differences, most prophetically, a more patient resolve for climactic restraint.  Regardless of this comparison, the track is amazing.  There’s no fancy way to say it, it’s so wonderfully saturated. Single Release: My Body is Dumb [The Great American Novel]

a1289334133_10‘My Body is Dumb’ by The Great American Novel   (Brooklyn, New York) *

The Great American Novel is a powerhouse rock band from homefield Brooklyn.  The chorus’ consist of some of the most single handedly catchy and melodic lines, dredging up a deep well of influencers.  Well, ‘My Body is Dumb‘ is no different, in fact it’s the track that finally convinced me of their “powerhouse” status- leading up to the release of their next LP, slotted for any day now (this spring). Courage

Woodenbox_Courage_ArtworkCourage by Woodenbox   (Glasgow, Scotland)

Nobody said Scottish music was only for the kilt wearing, beer drinking rambunctious types (but if that describes you, I totally support and respect your lifestyle). Woodenbox  is a gigant-huge-normous folk rock band from Glasgow, so fun and densely produced that I had to make up that ridiculous word. The Americana roots are strong with this one but the sound is not hesitant to stray from traditional folk rock as ‘Courage’ does a great job of escalating to new heights while inclusively pumping out sax stabs alongside reverbed, surf guitar that could be sampled straight from the Django theme song. @thinknotsleep

All The Colors Of Your Heart

3996027890-1All The Colors Of Your Heart’ by Ketamines   (Toronto)

All The Colors Of Your Heart‘ by Ketamines combines a funky melody, helped by back up vocals and keyboard, with  lo-fi sound quality and lead vocals to create truly catchy garage pop. Judging from this and their other work this band really know how to do sixties inspired garage pop. This track however takes a new stance with its decidedly more funk inspired take and added druggy feel that create a bouncy feel. This song invokes a transition to summer we’ve all been waiting for. @eacarlblom

Dream Mine

Dream Mine by Lantern   (Philadelphia)

I’m kind of late on this one but Dream Mine by Lantern is more than worth a listen. This lo-fi mesh of garage, punk and electronic that in some ways embodies everything I love about rock and roll in one grimy mess. There are repeated chords, gargled shouts and screams, shitty production quality and alienated lyrics. Lantern also recalls the protopunk of the late 60′s and early 70′s by incorporating psychedelic melodies mixed with sharp growls. It’s not surprising then that they have a seven minute cover of “I wanna be your dog” but I wouldn’t just characterize them by that, however, because they take their sound further than the past by adding haunting samples and interludes that enter the realms of pure noise. This album seems unique when not many do. @eCarlblom

Gallowdance

2824239920-1Gallowdance by Lebanon Hanover (UK)

UK dark wavers, Lebanon Hanover, make smooth danceable minimal tracks that evoke the music 1980s yore transmuted to a new era. They mesh the styles of recent scenes with old standards quite well. One can hear influence of 1980′s goth stand byes like Sisters of Mercy and Echo and the Bunnymen in the gut air melodies and the ache of the singers voice. This style is updated, however, by synth backgrounds reminiscent of more modern bands like coldcave. This melding of old and new works for Lebenon Hanover as they create darkly catchy tracks. @eCarlblom

Beat Machine

Beat Machine by X-Ray Fiends   (Auckland, New Zealand)

X-ray fiend serves up fast paced anxious surf tunes that echo early garage pop. The repeated guitar chords and frantic lyrics add an almost post-punky feel to music I would otherwise categorize as garage. They’re going back to beginning here recalling early garage rock bands with song titles like “witch” and shouting ghoulish howls. Overall, they synthesize these styles into a cohesive style that flows between these two songs quite well–working well separately and together. Carlblom

Up in the Trees

artworks-000040083364-zs3mod-t500x500Up in the Trees by Ikebe Shakedown   (Brooklyn, NY)

Brooklyn based afro-beat funk band Ikebe Shakedown is quickly building a ton of credits to their name. Having released a highly praised full-length album not long ago as well as numerous vinyl/digital singles, the band recently teamed up with German indie 45 label Mocambo Records to drop a fiery new single ‘Up in the Trees’. Recorded at the most in-demand soul studio in Brooklyn, Daptone, this track is nothing short of the consistently top-tier, authentic releases that pour out of those walls. The limited edition 45 has already sold out but you can stream it on repeat on Soundcloud. Let this track be your introduction to the band and start marking your ICal with their upcoming dates because it won’t be long before can’t see them at your favorite local Brooklyn spot anymore. @thinknotsleep

Take Me to the Sea

Il Abanico was one of my favorite DIY bands.  I say was because they’ve renamed themselves and now operate as Salt Cathedral.  For months I’ve heard rumors of a new album in the works and as I’ve been bitting my nails waiting for the release, the band has been working hard to deliver.  Without saying too much (I’ll save it for the actual release), I’d like to present their first single- a track you might have heard if you were fortunate enough to see them live before they left for tour.  @Dingusonmusic

Single

Single by Wild Balbina   (Vigo, Spain)

I love listening to music like this in the morning. That swoony, surfy, girl group sound that can make even the darkest clouds disappear. I can’t help but listen to Single and think that my day is going to turn into one of those cloudless afternoons filled with daydreams about different boys or well, mostly boys. This is the kind of music that puts you in that mindset for some sweet, sweet love. I don’t know about you but I’m always up for that. @LeahLovecat
