Single Release: Harry Eastlack {Bbigpigg}

7996462560_8f3781fe3d_o‘Harry Eastlack’ by Bbigpigg   (Brooklyn, NY)

I stumbled on this band walking around Toronto after my own NXNE show this past Friday and was immediately reeled in by the energy and control these dudes had over the ‘noise’ they were making inside Handlebar, a rad venue on Augusta. All the elements were in place to make this band accessible to any music fan open to some vicious jams; danceable beats smashed under repetitive guitar noise, distortion and riffs that reminded me of minimalist classical music. The bassist brings a bit more of a progressive feel while the vocals are infectiously classic punk. I wasn’t able to catch many bands during my stay in Toronto but Bbigpigg is the one that stuck with me. Luckily they are also from New York. @thinknotsleep

Ruby Pins {Chariot}

RUBY-PINS-608-300x294Ruby Pins’ by Chariot   (San Francisco, California)

Ruby Pins is the solo project of Grass Widow drummer Lillian Maring. Her years spent in the San Francisco garage rock band have taken their toll—Ruby Pins sounds like a Grass Widow side project while an individualistic flair. Maring has been writing the debut, self-titled album for the last three years and recorded it in Port Townsend, Washington, with just an SM58 mic. Given the locale, second single “Chariot” is appropriately isolated and introspective. @emily_wheeler

Video Release: Something to Blame {The Gradients} (Best New Video)

This is a video that snuggles up against the song and says, hello- we are the Gradients.  Yes, there’s something twisted, but there’s also something explicitly charming about us.  Care to be the big spoon?  Congrats to the band for shooting what is quickly becoming my favorite video of the year.  I laugh and I laugh.  @Dingusonmusic

Single Release: Hold Up Girl {NGHBRS}

NGHBRS-promo-photo-low-res-2‘Hold Up Girl’ by NGHBRS   (Long Island, NY)

Hold Up Girl‘ is the latest single released by NGHBRS off their highly anticipated debut, full-length album Twenty One Rooms set to release July 16. True indie pop-rock, this track has all the right elements of a dancey, guitar driven rock tune and pop sensibility in every passing moment. To record their debut albumNGHBRS moved into an abandoned mansion, the former estate of famous American poet and journalist, William Cullen Bryant, on the North Shore of Long Island in the fall of 2012. The estate was later turned into a museum and eventually shut down, leaving behind exhibits and historical pieces still in tact. For over 2 months, the band lived with no Internet, no television, and in a house that was rumored to be haunted. Ain’t that some shit.  @thinknotsleep

The Device EP {TWRP}

a3921383606_2The Device EP by TWRP  (Toronto, Canada)

I really like farcry 3 blood dragon. I bet your shows are fucking fantastic. Smiles all around. Seriously, Daft Punk has taken over the world and with 80′s guitars and four to the floor drums, they are going to have a disco dance party forever! This super niche music future is awesome, there is everything, and so much of it sounds just great. I really wanted to see live video footage when I read your description on your facebook page “The band that looks like the Power Rangers playing keytars,” get on that guys, sounds amazing. Drone Ranger (Best New Music)

a0683656538_2Drone Ranger by Drone Ranger   (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)

Gentle and seductive, smoke filled gloom room, david lynch “fire walk with me”, veiled horror, gripping drive. obvious one, floyd of course. this started as a brainstorm, maybe writing this way is more true. Jesus, a gasp, floating with ‘Shadow and Ghost’ (it’s an expression, isn’t it). I said this once already but thank science for 4 tracks, tascam tascam tascam. ‘Gameboy Idiot’, You Are Perfect, there isn’t a soul in the modern music world who wouldn’t swoon to this suped up shoegaze, what the strokes used to be, masterpiece. Please come re-record the album, record a single, anything, We will have all sorts of boisterous fun at Dingus Records Studios @ Freecandy making history with what is already a tantalizingly fulfilling, subtly inventive, and truly virtuous DIY feat. @dingusrecords

A La Espera {La Nina Hilo}

a2055087200_2A La Espera by La Nina Hilo   (Pamplona, Spain)

Packaged with the perfect blend of drive, cheese, and fun, the new album from La Nina Hilo has pure pop appeal. Back with an increased sense of maturity for composition this here is a band that has achieved something pivitol with this second album. They have proven to posses the ability to look inward and develop consistently, maintaining remnants of themselves from Prologo, while attaining new heights through exploration. @dingusrecords

Single Release: newsong {Hank May} (Best New Music)

a2545019951_10‘newsong’ by Hank May   (Los Angeles, California) *

Hank May was formerly Rock Dove.  His Paper Boat EP got Best New Music here at Dingus accompanied by high praise for the song-writer.  Last month he released a single, now titled under the singer/guitarist’s birth name, called ‘newsong‘.  It’s back to brilliance for the lush layered folk tracks that take what, to my dispair, most would call a “Bon Iver” sound and bring out power and strength.  Though the track is acoustic and though the vocals capture an airy softness, the tectonic play between harmonic parts creates an unshakable foundation to which beauty and sadness, at the same time, unfold.  @Dingusonmusic

Fox Tales {Creature Comfort}

a1413404313_10Fox Tales by Creature Comfort   (Nashville, Tennessee)

This is a little sweeter than the stuff I’m used to but everyone can do with a little sweet every now and then. There is a calm cool about Fox Tales that draws you in. Perhaps it’s the use of tambourines or indulgent guitars but whatever it is, its there and its beautiful. Maybe we don’t always need garage rock and Creature Comfort have given us an example of what else we should be listening to. @LeahLovecat
