Electric Hawaii

rsz_opossomElectric Hawaii by Opossom   (Auckland, New Zealand)

If a group of ghosts had grown up at the beach playing music together, and one of them went away for school, graduated with a sonic arts degree, and came back to put the old band together, they would probably sound a lot like Opossom. That’s not clear enough for you? Well I am referring to the artificial organ sounds, washed out vocals, and psych sensibility that make up this pop album. The only thing you should be confused about out is how one guy can sound like a handful of ghosts with such rich histories.  @AshleyCanino

Summer’s Dead

‘Summer’s Dead’ by Eastern Hollows   (Brooklyn, NY)

If global warming has got you a little a confused about the time of year, Eastern Hollows wants to remind you that ‘Summer’s Dead.’ But it’s not all bad news. Like the tracks off of their Days Ahead EP, covered here, this single has a depth and maturity you don’t often find in shoegaze. Perhaps because it’s a crossbreed with a British psych pop sound and anything British is inherently on the classy end of things. More likely it’s dedicated studio time that brings about their layered, but concise sound. Look for their first LP to drop in the near, near future. @AshleyCanino

California Eden

California Eden by Celestial Shore   (Brooklyn, New York) *

The other night, Celestial Shore came through my new location of employment- a new DIY venue on the corner of N.9th and Havemeyer called Muchmore’s and blew away an unjustly small crowd with their brand of sputtering psych rock.  California Eden is but a small representation of the laborious musical magic that this group touts.  Between the inventive facade, the shiny new coat that is the aesthetic drip of the band, there lies poetic intelligence rooted in experimental structures.  [Free Download]  @Dingusonmusic
