Adios Ghost

2767600735-1Adios Ghost by Adios Ghost   (Brooklyn, New York)

I can’t stop tapping my toes. I can’t stop playing drums on my steering wheel. I can’t stop shifting my torso. I can’t stop closing my eyes and drifting into your reality. I can’t stop. I know you love The Police, not the government institution. I know you love TV On The Radio, and Animal Collective. The moody, full bodied, and impassioned  album is the first full length from Adios Ghost. The first of anything from them in fact, besides a nice collection of three demos from what one can only assume were the earliest of days for this Brooklyn based group. This has potential to be one of those bands that keeps you in the palms of their hands for years. @TheSnakeRecords

Nervous System

rsz_spookfishNervous System‘ by The Spookfish   (New York City, NY)

The Spookfish is owning the soundwaves between early 90s video game soundtracks and the contemporary sigh of a miniKORG. This single,  made for a film, is an oddyssey to elsewhere. Take it plunging into the deep, out to outer space, or down the street to see if your bike made it through the night in one piece. @AshleyCanino

Sentimental Gun

rsz_gsstoakSentimental Gun‘ by GSSTOAK   (Brooklyn, NY)

You know how humans these days spend a lot of time making robot music? ‘Sentimental Gun‘ sounds like robots making human music–in a good way! The vocals, horn (yes!) and melody lift the stuttering bassline into something deliciously artificial in its take on organic soundand pop music. Don’t know if the artist intended to produce such a commentary on electronic music, but whatever, it sounds great. More, please? [Free Download@AshleyCanino

Cahokia

rsz_3559738947-1 Cahokia by Honduras   (Brooklyn, New York)

Honduras’s Cahokia is a perfect morsel of well-crafted punk music. Dark and scuzzy, polished but not without its rough edges, the EP spins its own brand of danceable disenchantment.  Taking cues from surf and desert rock alike, the songs are at times ambient, even spooky, but without ever forgetting the band’s punk roots. They remain grimy, in the best way possible, with riffs insistent enough to burn holes through even the best laid carpets. Ideally Cahokia should be listened to at around two in the morning, blaring loudly out of your Chevy’s stereo as you barrel down some highway, but let’s be honest, none of us own cars. Send The Pain On

rsz_chromesparksSend the Pain On‘ by Chrome Sparks   (Brooklyn, NY)

This electronic track from Chrome Sparks is on the weighty end of what you can do with wavy computer sounds. The trudging percussion and intermittent slide whistle sound make the song surreal and emotive. The actual voice sample may be the least expressive element, but it adds to the retro tone. Sometimes electropop is for the club, sometimes you just need to take it out for a walk in the drizzle.  @AshleyCanino

English Breakfast

3311432713-1English Breakfast by English Breakfast   (New York City, NY)

You suit my mood. I am sleepy, I am comfortable and cozy. I want to sit by a fire and bob my head to your grooves. It must be the drums. There is something–not extremely unique, or perfected, but joyous and indulgent. Expression found through creation without concern for specificity, but wholeness of sonic quality, trials and errors, discovery. @TheSnakeRecords

Ten Thousand Thunders

rsz_bodycheetahTen Thousand Thunders by Body Cheetah   (New York City, NY)

Dream-like vocals, bass beats, and a 40oz = psych-hop? You will find Body Cheetah where acid and hip-hop converge. It’s a spot a lot like the back bench of the bar an hour before closing when a lot of people are still wild in front of the DJ and a lot of people are sort of passed out like you and should probably go home, but hey, there’s always X’s rooftop after this and a case at the bodega is cheap as hell so you might as well…Unlike that scenario, this EP is also really enjoyable sober. Animal Feelings (Best New Music)

rsz_gospels2Animal Feelings‘ by Gospels   (Queens, NY)

This band was right under my nose for a while. Between a couple of personal connections and the epic stream of music pouring out of their alma mater, it’s hard to believe I missed them. Now they have my full attention, but their show with MS MR has sold out well before day-of. I itch to see them live and hear a full set, but for now I will make do with ‘Animal Feelings’ on repeat. With mesmerizing ambience and a charming guitar hook, you might skate over the lyrics. Keep listening until you’ve understood every word. Gospels has not only managed to verbalize the sensation of human frailty in love, but also set it to the music of your most cinematic dreams. “What a cruel joke to give an animal feelings,” indeed.  [Free Download@AshleyCanino

Adventures

rsz_goexploringAdventures by Go Exploring   (Buffalo, NY)

I have the expected attention span for a 20-something in the 2000-somethings, so when I see a track length longer than 00:03:30 my eyes go out of focus, my body grows weary and I get a charley horse in my left foot. Go Exlporing has the medicine for that. Though most of the songs on the EP are around 5 minutes+, they are comprised of movements progressively stripped down and altered–not enough to draw you out of the song, but the right amount to keep you awake, moving and interested. Whether you opt to listen passively, or more actively follow each part of a song as it dissolves into a minimalist puddle and fades out, trust that you won’t get crampy or anything. Tangled

rsz_yokelandtheheavyweightTangled‘ by Yokel and the Heavyweight   (Brooklyn, NY)

Lately I am a big fan of country sounds coming out of anywhere, but the Western United States. Brooklyn-based musician Chase Caillouette has emerged with a new project and a new single. ‘Tangled’ has a very familiar structure and tone, but manages to be current. There isn’t much online about this  project yet, but if you’re local, keep Googling. We all need more live, acoustic performances in our lives.     @AshleyCanino
