Single Release: newsong {Hank May} (Best New Music)

a2545019951_10‘newsong’ by Hank May   (Los Angeles, California) *

Hank May was formerly Rock Dove.  His Paper Boat EP got Best New Music here at Dingus accompanied by high praise for the song-writer.  Last month he released a single, now titled under the singer/guitarist’s birth name, called ‘newsong‘.  It’s back to brilliance for the lush layered folk tracks that take what, to my dispair, most would call a “Bon Iver” sound and bring out power and strength.  Though the track is acoustic and though the vocals capture an airy softness, the tectonic play between harmonic parts creates an unshakable foundation to which beauty and sadness, at the same time, unfold.  @Dingusonmusic

Slow & Close {Mezzanine Swimmers}

a1610025872_10Slow & Close by Mezzanine Swimmers   (New York, New York)

Today’s a drone day- it’s dreary here in New York City, I’m sitting shirtless in the Bronx, smoking a bowl and having my eardrums assaulted by Mezzanine Swimmers. So it’s no wonder Slow & Close is coming out of NYC since so much of is seems designed for a long subway ride.  There’s a nice mix of acoustics (which are often dripping wet in reverb) and electronics where the shuffle creates the melodic movement that acts like a cloud, masking structural organization and obscuring harmonic clarity.  @Dingusonmusic

Video Release: Overloaded {Lil Kids}

A few days back, Lil Kids hit us with their new album “to collect digital dust” as frontman Adam Kane said via Facebook.  It was titled- Dead Ass.  Here’s the video of the first track, ‘Overloaded’.  It’s exactly what I’ve come to ecpect from them; completely silly.  @Dingusonmusic

तद्भव {DIMENSIONS}

a0971264048_10तद्भव by DIMENSIONS   (Brooklyn, New York)

Brooklyn’s very own DIMENSIONS was a band that slipped through my radar for the past year while their combination of inspired ambiance and droning synths evolved organically.   तद्भव is the title of their most recent dual single- where each track title provides more of anthropomorphized manifesto for its growth than a witty insights (‘Folded Moments‘ and ‘Born of That‘).  Though at the end of the day, a band like DIMENSIONS is only ever meant for a niche audience and when I say meant, I feel as if im talking about fate. Single Release: The Initiation {Mykki Blanco}

artworks-000047701797-yvhflh-t500x500‘The Initiation’ by Mykki Blanco   (New York, New York)

Blanco is back with another single pushing the limits of the word “intense”.  If you’re not caught up on the anti-rap career, I’d suggest familiarizing yourself deeply because a full conceptual understanding of ‘The Initiation‘ requires much more than a singular listen.  Blanco has made a name for himself by bending gender lines and throwing the results in societies face- it’s worked.  His latest ignores protocol and reaches deep into the lower intestine to pull out a guttural fight song that any killer would gladly take the ring to. @Dingusonmusic

Heeney Gets Naked for the Fans

photo

The other night, Mark Fletcher and Max Kagan from Heeney got naked on stage at their show.  Shocking? Probably not for these two if you know them well but I’m sure there were some slack jaws in the audience.  The band cultivates a punk rock image that can be traced through their entire existence- right down to… getting naked for the better part of a set.  It’s only upward on the intensity scale from here, it wont be long before we’re all having shit flung at us.  @Dingusonmusic

Single Release: My Body is Dumb [The Great American Novel]

a1289334133_10‘My Body is Dumb’ by The Great American Novel   (Brooklyn, New York) *

The Great American Novel is a powerhouse rock band from homefield Brooklyn.  The chorus’ consist of some of the most single handedly catchy and melodic lines, dredging up a deep well of influencers.  Well, ‘My Body is Dumb‘ is no different, in fact it’s the track that finally convinced me of their “powerhouse” status- leading up to the release of their next LP, slotted for any day now (this spring). Dead Ass [Lil Kids]

1226751443-1Dead Ass by Lil Kids   (Brooklyn, New York) *

Brooklyn rap conman Adam Kane and production prodigy Nick Adams are back again, this time- with a new sound for Dead Ass.  It’s a rap album that samples (and often uses live recorded) rock elements flawlessly, without sounding forced, without sounding like a gimmick.  At least half of these tracks you’ve heard live if you’ve been existing in the Brooklyn DIY sphere, especially if you’ve been attending our shows.  Lil Kids does it again, and I know what I’m riding the subway to for the next few weeks. Video Release: New Age [Teen Girl Scientist Monthly]

Brooklyn Based, Teen Girl Scientist Monthly, recently released their video for ‘New Age‘ off their album, Modern Dances. This video plays out like a mini movie and holds your attention all the way through. It’s fun. It’s poppy. What more could you possibly need? @LeahLovecat

Single Release: Feeling Right [Happy Lives]

3177198498-1‘Feeling Right’ by Happy Lives   (New York, New York) *

It’s a smart song. Despite our previous ambitions, Happy Lives has released a single that strays so far from their original sound that you might wonder if its a joke in entirety.  What it lacks: 1. The intense machine sound brought on by the sampling, 2. The complex layering of synth layers, 3. Lande’s signature rock shout.  It’s a demonstration of aesthetic prowess.  ’Feeling Right‘ reaches new levels of conceptual thought in the bands embryonic career.  Without regard for their previous EP, Beel, (Beale) Lande and Holbrook have crafted a track that leaves a singular question on the tip of your tongue- what next?  I didn’t think I’d be posting today as I run from meeting to meeting in preparation for the coding of our new website, but this couldn’t wait.  ’Feeling Right’ will either be remembered as a pinacle moment of clarity that lead to a diverse career, or a stand alone flop that stuck out like a deformity in an otherwise homogeneous discography.
