Respect + Reverence (Best New Music)

Respect + Reverence by Mothers & Fathers   (Dublin) *

Originally brought to me via the video below, Mothers & Fathers immediately drew my attention.  It’s about a minute and thirty seconds into this album, with a positive attraction, that the cordial invitation is presented and you realize that Respect + Reverence is going to bring you plenty of beautiful moments.  ’Mark of Cain’ retracts the gesture only to whip the attitude back out, with trip hop drums, in a bipolar dance that remains the crux of the piece.  Gentle yet erratic, the album is a testament to the creative process that cross examines the duality of our species, back and forth and back and forth.  ’Prodigal Son’ lives up to its name, and things get serious.  Relax and take your time with this.  It’s smart, sophisticated and most important of all- completely heartfelt.  I’d compare it to Youth Lagoon, but it’s not quite that formulaic. Mothers & Fathers has an album coming out soon and it sounds like it’s going to be awesome.  Here’s there most recent video, the predecessor to release.  Be sure to check out another video by the group, how we stumbled upon them.

The New Jerusalem

‘The New Jerusalem’ by Mothers & Fathers   (January 8, 2012)

Working with the haunted sub-structure, Mothers & Fathers contrast some of their darker stanzas with brightly lit melodies.  ’The New Jerusalem’ is an authentic trip with enough insight to remain calm and numb for the entirety of the track.  The song comes of as undeniably oppressive and demonic, with lyrics that stand in some of the most murky water.
