Warm Blood

rsz_blithefieldWarm Blood by Blithe Field   (Chicago, IL) *

I listen to this EP with my eyes closed and I can see home movies. They aren’t from my own home, but they have the staticy quality of 8mm film and an edge of nostalgia that takes me back to where I never was. Then there’s ‘Quincey,’ which drops you right in the room at the time of the recording then zooms you out (zeroes you in?) to a vision of the whole galaxy, or just one person’s slow-moving fingertips. Blithe Field doesn’t sacrifice quality instrumentation in favor of some ‘clever’ samples, a move that wrecks a lot of experimental releases. Speeches, talking, questions–they complement plucking and tinny melodies.   @AshleyCanino

Home

Home by Young Jesus   (Chicago, IL)

“Your family and friends will never die.  Eveybody’s gonna be alright, tonight.”, the opening lines of Home, repeat and repeat, delivering, sliver by sliver, a false message of hope that rides through the rest of the album.  Grasping onto old rock tradition, Young Jesus crafts an record that feels like a winding journey through a group of subconscious dreamers, emphasizing hooks while basking in a bright and cheerful light.  Dingus
