Let’s Get Physical: Shadows of His Self

a0831104214_10Shadows of His Self by Harvey Eyeballs   (Brooklyn, New York)

Harvey Eyeballs makes lounge music for the current — or perhaps some upcoming — millennium. At least that is what’s to be gleaned from their most recent release, the three-song EP Shadows of His Self. The EP opens, in true casino-singer style, with a cover of Johnny Mercer and Rube Bloom’s ‘Fools Rush In‘ that makes exceptional use of the flute and also of frontman Fox Schwach’s inimitable voice. That this song, performed in such a traditional manner, serves merely as a lead-in to the original track ‘Young Jane‘ speaks volumes of the talent.

‘Young Jane’ is a warm, pensive piano movement accompanied by goofily forlorn vocals. The song itself is a clever mimic of jazzy ballads that contrasts the implied old fogeyishness of the music with clever, youthful lyrics. That Harvey Eyeballs’ synthesis of old and new pulls so mightily from one side on this EP is more than excused by the exceptional and interesting playing (especially on the end of ‘Young Jane’) and the stellar, wrap-itself-around-your-head warmth of the production.

Shadows of His Self is a craftier nod to Harvey Eyeballs’ velveteen influences than earlier releases, though it is missing some of the Zappa-inspired rock flair there present. Nevertheless, Shadows of His Self represents a clever artistic maneuver for a band whose aesthetic is already built on the clever appropriation of disused themes and tones. This is an EP that could have been released in the 50s, but which would not be more pointedly comic and refreshing if it had been released anytime other than now, or anywhere other than Brooklyn.

Shadows of His Self

For those who can listen to Nighthawks at the Diner on repeat enjoying the softly studded melodies laced with contemporary jazz piano, Harvey Eyeballs’ latest soundcloud release will hit the spot.  Shadows of His Self is a step back from the big band aura that Fox is known for in live routine, a contemplative set of three tracks turning the possessive passion inwards onto the singer/song-writer.  There is something wildly adaptive about the mechanics behind the piano driven tracks that unwind themselves turning metaphors of stripping into metaphors of unlacing- never mind the difference.  @Dingusonmusic

Tonight! The Jean Jackets Release a Record / Everyone Get Drunk at Muchmore’s

Well last night I went to bed around 8am.  Now it’s three in the afternoon on a show day and the juices are flowing as I climb out from under the sheets because today is Sour Stash.  Dingus has been teaming up with The Snake to bring you free DIY shows all year and it’s Harvey Eyeballs‘ time to run some thunder.  The Jean Jackets will be co-headlining and releasing their record- a record recorded at the famous Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen.  This morning, the first single leaked on their basists Soundcloud site and on the bands tumblr; an old track we know from demo but easily one of my favorites ‘Myth of Sisyphus‘ shows off a puffed chest while letting individuality shine within insecurity.  Alfonso Velez and Carroll will be opening the show starting at 930pm but be sure to get their early, you’ll want to nurture that buzz for the first set.  [Facebook Event@Dingusonmusic

Little Snowflake (Best New Music)

‘Little Snowflake’ by Harvey Eyeballs   (Brooklyn, New York) *

Little Snowflake‘, the latest release from one of my local favorites, Harvey Eyeballs, definitely lands in my top 3 Eyeball’s tracks, but does it reach number one?  The track carries some of the experimental tendencies that we saw in Harvey’s last release, where instrumentals erupt with a sense of confidence and lasting joy; this was what made me love ‘HIYA’ so much.  But, ‘Little Snowflake’ sacrifices something inside of its structure to apease a pop-centric audience, and it is this martyrdom that does indeed put the track at the top of my list.  In the end, it’s about love, like all good songs are  [Free Download Dingus

c.k.f.

‘c.k.f.’ by High Diner   (United States)

Reminding me of Harvey Eyeballs (although not as eclectic), High Diner announced their arrival with ‘c.k.f.‘ a pop tune that, if searching for an adjective, pops.  Wonky pianos line the surface as saturated vocal sparks jump in and out of the fire.  It’s the perfect song for bobbing down the sidewalk amidst the beautiful people.  [Free Download]  Dingus

Shot by Oresti Music.  Harvey Eyeballs is a mysterious package.  He’s like the brown paper bag wrapped, shoe-string tied box that shows up on Christmas Eve smelling of gasoline.  You never quite know what you’ll get, when he might explode and hell, that’s why we love ‘em.
