Single Release: Paelistine {Lucy Claire}

a0499031116_10‘Paelistine’ by Lucy Claire   (London, UK)

An incredible Hype Machine streaming find, Lucy Claire was exactly the 180 degree turn away from the indie rock and electronic pop that generally dominates the blog charts that I needed. Experimental and moody, ‘Paelistine‘ is modern classical music in the way that Brazilian Girls are jazz. The kind of tune that could divide the stiffs of the classical realm and bring together youthful music lovers worldwide. Comparable in soundscape to 21st century favorites like Olafur Arnalds, Lucy sets a tone that a large demographic can relate to. She composed and produced this track for the string quartet we hear recorded and will surely leave a mark on the independent neoclassical scene in the UK and abroad. @thinknotsleep

Video Release: CHeCk yO mIND {b.FUNK}

327011_10100139558271458_1260363813_o‘CHeCk yO mIND’ by b.FUNK   (New Jersey)

Some bands, when arranged well, have a vision that starts with music but continues to grow far beyond just one outlet of artistic expression. New Jersey’s hip-hop live band b.FUNK embody this mentality; intelligent funk with all the most progressive elements of modern hip-hop and a hustle that seems to (strangely) be a thing of the past in their scene. Their video for ‘CHeCk yO mIND‘ is a perfect representation of the band; fun, energetic and all-inclusive.  These qualities have made their fan base demographic very broad as well as made them not only college party legends but gotten them onto huge festivals like Toronto’s NXNE this June. Following this international tour, keep an eye out for future releases as we are told to expect mixtapes and EPs coming from both the band and frontman B.C. @thinknotsleep

Single Release: newsong {Hank May} (Best New Music)

a2545019951_10‘newsong’ by Hank May   (Los Angeles, California) *

Hank May was formerly Rock Dove.  His Paper Boat EP got Best New Music here at Dingus accompanied by high praise for the song-writer.  Last month he released a single, now titled under the singer/guitarist’s birth name, called ‘newsong‘.  It’s back to brilliance for the lush layered folk tracks that take what, to my dispair, most would call a “Bon Iver” sound and bring out power and strength.  Though the track is acoustic and though the vocals capture an airy softness, the tectonic play between harmonic parts creates an unshakable foundation to which beauty and sadness, at the same time, unfold.  @Dingusonmusic

Los Angeles rock n’ roll with a New York City tude. Wyatt Blair is catchy like fly paper, neighbor. Single Release: Apgetaryong {Cora Kim}

a0800846745_10‘Apgetaryong’ by Cora Kim   (Montreal)

This is a single that represents Cora Kim quite well in my opinion; a tasteful mix of all the reoccurring elements in her music from synth pop to Korean folk to trip hop and r&b. Sonically, this song leaves a lot of open space for the eclectic instruments involved to breath and groove, leaving us feeling like we are being lifted out of our moment in time and cast into the realm she has prepared. Her delicate vocals dance around the beat and are equal parts rhythmic and melodic. The instrumental is comprised of high tuned drums and bright synths, among other percussive elements, that make for a very colorful and light landscape. All around a great production and developed sound. @thinknotsleep

Single Release: Dreaming {Smallpools}

964451_583761844989291_489612004_o‘Dreaming’ by Smallpools   (Los Angeles, CA)

There are many different levels of being turned onto a song and why it should be appreciated in the blogosphere and abroad. Today upon discovering what will quite possibly become the most hyped song of the summer, I am all ears for that very reason. The potential for Smallpools new synth-pop, dance track ‘Dreaming‘ to take off and be heard at parties and clubs all over the world this warm season is mind blowing. The main keyboard line and Passion Pit inspired vocals are enough to grab your attention for a good 5 plays in a row and be assured that posting this track on your social media pages will make you the coolest person your followers know that day. Hard-hitting production and intelligent pop arrangement will surely bring this group to international recognition and I’m glad to have caught on in these early stages. Oh, and download that shit for free you fools! [Free Download] @thinknotsleep

Single Release: Francs {Benny Francs}

artworks-000048017966-5m2cff-t500x500‘Francs’ by Benny Francs   (Chicago, Illinois)

Hip hop is a tough genre for the DIY.  Perhaps because faithful rap is born on the street.  Sure, you can go the bitches, money, fame route, but I’d like to think that the world is getting sick of that falsity.  Real rap has a soul defined by struggle (in fact nearly all truthful music is born from struggle).  It comes from our declining cities where most are trapped as mice on a spinning wheel aching for a moment of peace and production.  Hip hop is a touch genre for the DIY because those involved in the struggle, often, are not your tech savvy upper class.  But Benny Franc has the flow.  It comes from experience and though this is his first release- you can taste the personality in ‘Francs‘. Video Release: New Age [Teen Girl Scientist Monthly]

Brooklyn Based, Teen Girl Scientist Monthly, recently released their video for ‘New Age‘ off their album, Modern Dances. This video plays out like a mini movie and holds your attention all the way through. It’s fun. It’s poppy. What more could you possibly need? @LeahLovecat

Hands’ EP

1696615218-1Hands’ EP by The Top   (Brooklyn, NY)*

The fact that most of you have probably never heard of The Top is an unfortunate and curious reality. As the Hands’ EP runs its’ course, I acknowledge that reality and write this to you, with hopes of turning the music onto even one more fan, one more pair of ears to then share with their friends. The overall production is hot; most noticeably the vocals peak with a warmth we all crave as lovers of Nick Drake and The Beach Boys, but also from the crispy sound of the drums that groove and break up perfectly amongst the piano, acoustic guitar and electric guitar chinks on the 2 and 4. The band certainly accomplishes their retro pop ambitions and there is no reason they shouldn’t already have toured the US with bands like Dr. Dog and The Walkmen. This is the sort of band that fans will without any hesitation take under their wings and deliver to other music lovers with glee. It’s one thing to be told by hyped up music blogs and taste makers that you should be following a cool new band, and it’s another altogether to hear a band like The Top and pass them along out of sheer disbelief that they haven’t hit it big yet. I hope this EP finds you well and that you will pass it along like a peace pipe. @thinknotsleep
