DOPEWAVE IS REAL {Flashlight Tag/Smoke Don’t Smoke/Head Underwater}

a3854437049_10DOPEWAVE IS REAL by Flashlight Tag/Smoke Don’t Smoke/Head Underwater   (Los Angeles, California)

There’s a wordy justification for the genre DOPEWAVE on their Bandcamp page.  Though I’ve never been convinced to call electronic music anything other than that.  ”Dopewave is an experiment in genre creation. Birthed out of a new group of young producers creating electronic sounds, that are simultaneously like nothing, and like everything you’ve ever heard.” I’m not entirely sure why I needed to read that, when I should just feel it, as the album notes read “Talking about music is a much different experience than listening to music.”

Despite the fun I’m having in teasing their explanations, there is some real glimmer of self-doubt there; when in all truthiness, each song on the compilation impresses on an instinctual level.  From taking ‘I Know There’s an Answer‘ and grinding it into a raw and completely unrecognizable dance track to the more empathetic ‘When it’s For You‘, DOPEWAVE IS REAL is 100% entertaining.  Trap influences unleash the laid back element along side the paralyzing synth intensity that carries the compilation.  Intensity carries it through to conclusion, never skipping a beat, even as your traditional 2/4 dance beats fade for intriguing experimentation. Live is Banana.  ’Live is Banana’  God, I try so hard to bring you brand new artists gracing these front pages but throughout our quest we’ve created a list of the DIY poster-childrean and when they release something new, I can’t help myself- you need to know.  Trust me young Padawan- it’s a mix of the best.  The best of the best.  @Dingusonmusic

Section 3

121881039-1Section 3 by Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen   (Brooklyn, NY)

Brooklyn DIY recording outlet Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen has been busy establishing themselves as a staple in the underground music scene and with the release of their latest compilation Section 3 they are solidifying that title just a little more. An ambitious 23-song project all recorded at Mama Coco’s with in-house producer Oliver Ignatius, the album is a diverse collection of local NYC artists coming together to contribute their songs to a rad lineup. With standout tracks from The Dough Rollers, Grand Rapids, and Goodman, anyone stumbling on this release is bound to find a few tracks (or many) that they can dig on. [Free download] @thinknotsleep

Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen: Section 2

Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen: Section 2 by Various Artists   (New York, New York) *

Two compilations in one day?! Yes, and to put it up next to my own you know I damn well love this one too.  Possibly my favorite DIY label/studio in the game right now is Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen, run by Ghost Pal frontman and all around intellectual, Oliver Ignatius (a man who conjures up mythical associations).  The studio culture has spawned a family willing to stake their loyalty in blood.  It’s a fucking hard thing to do:  run a studio, pay the bills and somehow not take one miserable job just for the cash flow.  There hasn’t been a flop yet and Section 2 proves it.  I hope I’ll be arranging Mama Coco’s concerts until the day I die- hashtag stories to tell my grandkids.  [Free Download]  @Dingusonmusic

Soulbound V.12

Soulbound Volume Twelve by Various Artists   (New York, New York) *

Marking the one year anniversary of our free DIY compilation series, Soulbound Volume Twelve includes some of our very favorites among some of the newest gems from the community.  With tracks from veterans Basic Printer, Kick Snare Leave and Seabiscuit, the compilation is one of my personal favorites.  With more songs fit to be called “singles” than ever before, we at the Dingus office are sure you’ll love it.  The best part?  It’s completely free courtesy of all the talented musicians involved.  Head to our Bandcamp page and get the latest for your late summer travels.  [Free Download]  @Dingusonmusic

Soulbound V.11

Soulbound Volume Eleven by Various Artists   (New York, New York)

For the first time ever, our Soulbound series is recalling artists from the past, bringing you up to date on some of our favorite musicians careers.  Inviting back the likes of Harvey Eyeballs, Tours, Avidd and Seabiscuit to check in on their growth proved a rewarding experience.  Surrounded by this months favorite newbies, the core of our compilation is an eclectic genre whirlwind that will tickle every part of your audio heart.  We are proud, delighted and overwhelmed by the coming of our one year anniversary- and as for year two, Monday marks the start of another DIY onslaught.  [Free Download]  @Dingusonmusic

Materia Obscura

Materia Obscura by Various Artists   (Mexico)

How a compilation begins is often the most clerical part of its entire journey.  If you hate the first song, you’re gut probably wont let you get any further. When the most recent Bad Pop compilation came on, I knew right away that i could easily judge this book my its cover.  Succinctly, Materia Obscura sets its posture and warps its way through a genre beding, inter-dimensional mission.  [Free Download]  Dingus

DiggUp Tapes Comp 1 (Best New Music)

DiggUp Tapes Comp 1 by Various Artists   (Raleigh, North Carolina) *

It’s been a while since I’ve looked through the DiggUp Tapes releases, well maybe not, but it feels like it has.  Today, my inbox was greeted by an email containing their first compilation disc- featuring some of my favorite artists and some new.  The album comes for a good cause, to end an anti-GLBT initiative in the state, a movement attempting to ban the union of same sex couples.  For those of you still lagging in the Darwinian process (cough bigot cough), we’re proud to announce the discovery that human beings are human beings, no matter their creed, color or sexuality.  Do your self, your society, and your world a favor:  support equality and freedom, just as you support your own.  As a personal favor to me, spread this compilation and sentiment as far and wide as you can.  You can find more information here.  [Free Download]  Dingus

“From now to May 8, North Carolinians will have an opportunity to vote on Amendment One, a proposed constitutional amendment that would make marriage between a man and a woman the only legally protected relationship in the state. If passed, Amendment One would ban civil unions and domestic partnerships for thousands of gay and straight couples and write discrimination into North Carolina’s constitution. But the amendment is so far-reaching that its impact goes beyond same-sex marriage, which is already banned by state law. Legal experts have said that the amendment’s vague wording could have harmful unintended consequences for thousands of North Carolina families and their children. By eliminating legal protections for all relationships other than heterosexual marriage, the amendment’s wording could take away health care benefits and other protections from the children of unmarried parents, jeopardize domestic violence protections for unmarried women, and make it difficult for unmarried gay and straight couples to make medical and financial decisions for the people they love.”  DiggUp Tapes

Soulbound V.9

Soulbound Volume Nine by Various Artists   (New York, New York) *

Soulbound Volume Nine marks the introduction of Leah Lovecat to our staff- and for the first time, I’m not picking all the tracks.  With another amazing set of artists contributing to the free download, our ninth edition is just another step up in a long chronology of DIY history.  As always, we’d like to thank the musicians.  Without them, there is no blog.  Dingus
