Single Release: I’ve Seen Things {Bruised Skies}

a3352847036_10‘I’ve Seen Things’ by Bruised Skies   (Coventry, UK)

Coming from the appropriately titled album Ambient Works: Year 1 is a cut called ‘I’ve Seen Things‘ by UK group Bruised Skies. The background of this group or individual is as mysterious as the sounds being produced; bells and chimes sprinkle down like rain drops in slow motion while soft keyboard pads and nearly inaudible, spacious drum hits keep a reminder of what time feels like. Ambient, chill, and strikingly soulful, this track may be what you need today in order to sit back and collect yourself before becoming lost in the anxiety of the work week. Take a breath, a minute, and most importantly a listen here today. @thinknotsleep

Born New

40dbf03d04e5c2ab116b8889b4d9c78c_largeBorn New by Tórild   (New York/Stockholm)

With electronic music more popular than ever, its’ reach stretching far across genre lines, it is only natural that modern musicians would tip their hats to and follow along the more illbient, psychedelic path that artists like DJ Shadow and Massive Attack paved so purely. Tórild is a new group working out of New York City with Stockholm transplant, Halina Larsson, fronting the band; her angelic demeanor and even sweeter melodies help embed listeners deep into the world they have created. Instrumentally advanced in a scene of hack producers and Abelton slobs and certainly worthy of the $3k plus they received from excited fans via Kickstarter. Their anticipated debut album, BORN NEW, which is now at least somewhat fan-funded (we know this stuff costs way more than $3k), is expected to release in Spring 2013, but for now we can stream two singles they have generously shared with the public. @thinknotsleep

Jason Mars

rsz_masonjarsJason Mars by Mason Jars   (Springfield, MA)

The Jason Mars EP ranges from chilled out tracks that aren’t too far from what you may have heard, to the repetitive vocal sample and heartbeat effect of ‘C’mon Pig.’ It’s so trippy, in a good way, that by the time the canned drum sample appears, it’s refreshing? Let’s get weird. [Free Download]  @AshleyCanino

It Felt Like Years, And Yet

3291652881-1It’s Felt Like Years, And Yet by WildYouth   (USA)

WildYouth’s It’s Felt Like Years, And Yet is a lo-fi gem. With the band being relatively new I was quite impressed with this EP. It’s seasoned with experimental shoegaze and indie lo-fi. Pour ingredients into a large bowl, mix in a bit of rock for edge and there you have it! A delicious mouthful of what WildYouth is ready to serve up. Now give me your bowl, I’ll give you a generous offering. @LeahLovecat

Gold Can Stay

rsz_brokeforfreeGold Can Stay by Broke For Free   (Oakland, CA)

There was something in the bandcamp water in the month of December. Nine out of ten new tracks were tagged ‘ambient,’ ‘chillwave,’ or both and I can’t tell you how much I missed verses and lyrics. Gold Can Stay provided none of that, and was totally tagged ‘chillwave,’ but was clever and well-produced enough to break me out of the December doldrums. Each of the four tracks is cool and will make you move your shoulders a bit. You may get a little contemplative listening to it, but what else are you going to do when it’s freezing outside?  [Free Music]  @AshleyCanino

Lay of the Land

‘Lay of the Land’ by Geodesics   (Austin, TX)

Turn a typical electronic chillwave track inside out and you get ‘Lay of the Land.’ All of the drone and reverb is in the foreground while the vocals stand way out in the distance. You can barely make them out through the haze, but as the figures become more familiar, they go from unsettling to comforting. You’re practically home by the time the synth fades out. Piranha EP

Piranha EP by Piranha   (Brest, France)

Piranha EP found me at the right moment. I was feeling a little weird, a little spacey, and a little French. @AshleyCanino

In Flux EP

In Flux EP by The Watermark High   (Johannesburg, South Africa)

In Flux EP is dynamic and visceral. There is a track for every frame of mind (or at least four). Similar releases tend to be fussy, but The Watermark High finds a musical idea, develops it, and sticks with it so the listener can experience its rhythms without over-thinking. These songs are ideal for when you aren’t sure what mood you’re in and you’d like the music to pick one for you. [Free Download]. @AshleyCanino

Feel The Drip

Feel The Drip by PrismViews   (Detroit, Michigan)

It’s quite obvious that PrismViews are a little off. There is something about them that almost isn’t quite right. It’s that sense of weirdness that makes listening to Feel The Drip strangely frightening. There is something wonderfully distorted that kind of messes with your head and you can honestly say that it’s unlike anything you have ever heard before. It’s disco, it’s pop, it’s a beautiful nightmare. @LeahLovecat

Waking Nervous

Waking Nervous by We Miss The Earth   (Portland, Oregon)

Every once in a while I come across an album that I feel I must have, that I need to put onto my iPod. Waking Nervous is an album that I definitely need to download. We Miss The Earth have written some dark and infectious post-punk tracks. I get sick of those kitschy pop bands. They’re good for a little while but then you start to feel the after effects of their poor substance. We Miss The Earth have delivered a substantial teaser (all tracks are off their upcoming LP) that has wet my palate for future releases. @LeahLovecat
