The Shones EP by The Shones (Boston, Massachusetts)
My first listen of the day came in the form of a surf rock EP, self titled, The Shones. It’s hopefulness in the form of music. Is that the sun I see peeking through the sky? No? Well, maybe it’s the music that’s giving me this sunny disposition. Having reinvented their sound within the past couple of years, The Shones have found, what I think is perfect for the upcoming denim short weather. Pull out your headphones and download this sucker. Fat Creeps EP by Fat Creeps (Boston, MA)
Fat Creeps are one part romance, one part angst and two parts rock. A little bit “leave me alone” and a little bit “come closer.” The Fat Creeps EP contains smooth female vocals and surfy guitars that tug at your heartstrings enough to make your head spin. You’re thrown into a world of hazy dreams and breaking relationships that somehow seem to cushion your fall to the ground. You’re lovestruck and hopeless, but it’s alright. You find yourself feeling content and it’s all thanks to the music pulsing through your skull. @LeahLovecat

‘ritalin rhymes’ by ih8evrthn (Boston, Massachusetts)
Haunting and emotional. Fractured and despairing. ‘ritalin rhymes’ is a whirling wall of sound that washes over you, bringing you deep inside this reflective and troubled psyche. The lyrics, breathless and barely intelligible, harken back to simpler times. Enjoy the hypnotic melodies, and check out the rest of the album, which is a deeply personal collection of songs, recorded over the span of several years. @Solidusonmusic
Swampp Thingg by CreaturoS (Boston, Massachusetts)
Waking up on a rainy, dreary day always poses an opportunity to fall in love with some new music. I opened my laptop and began my search for my new virtual soulmate and came across CreaturoS. Their album, Swampp Thingg, is full of raw psych rock that is enough to put you in a lusty trance for a greater part of your day. So stay inside and let CreaturoS keep you warm. @LeahLovecat

Cheat Sheets by No Comply (Boston, Massachusetts)
Sometimes when your night turns to complete shit you just need some rock and roll to get your head back on track. It was almost too perfect that I came across No Comply. Cheat Sheets is a great album to turn your day around. When I started listening to ‘Got Nothin’ and the lyrics “I don’t want to talk with you, no emails, no texts”, just hit me in the gut. How is it that you find a song you need at exactly the right moment? I have a feeling the rock Gods had something to do with this. If that’s the case then I salute you. @LeahLovecat

Disaster Sounds by Kid/Astro (Boston, Massachusetts)
Released their debut album Disaster Sounds on cassette via their own independent label Seagreen Records. We’re gonna have to come up with a new name for this subgenre of pop rock besides lo-fi or surf or noise rock or punk soft. With all these super high vocals layered triple or quadruple times over one another. Dirty live amp sounds, was it poorly recorded or was it poorly recorded? Noise pop is pretty good. Anyhow Kid/Astro fits right in there. Disaster Sounds has a nice fuzz. The totally popped out high male vocals don’t grab me as much as the grunged out guitars. Pretty good pop punk feel, the band is solid, the songs drive themselves forward hard, would be fun to check out this Boston band live. @CigaretteBreath
“we play fast, scuzzy pop songs about the youth dream, drugs, and of course, girls.”- kid/astro
‘Porcelain Mask’ by Giantist (Boston, Massachusetts) *
[Bandcamp Link] [Snake Records Link]
An adept fusion of medieval grunge and post pop-punk blues, ‘Porcelain Mask‘ is an anthem for a generation without concrete definition. The chorus chanting “born for nothing,” lyrically sophisticated, the song speaks to anyone who feels a lack of meaning, realism, or reason. It exists with hope, resolving on a climactic moment of harmony and serenity before falling back into the constant kinetic struggle between action and assimilation. Jake Sherman by Jake Sherman (Boston, Massachusetts)
Vocally abrupt in a very String Cheese Incident sort of way, Jake Sherman brings a jazzy sock sliding album that puts guitar tones from Katy Lied into modern context. Taking structural breaks, the established order is always skipping steps keeping the listener tuned. The self titled debut is a powerful statement of the individual composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist. Personality aside, it’s about as musically proficient as anything. The Most Tarnished Birds by The Dirty Dishes (Boston, Massachusetts)
There is something about The Dirty Dishes that just tugs at me. I think it’s the way they mix sweetness with a bit of roughness. The Most Tarnished Birds is a wonderful example of this mixture. Each song title is one word, which I happen to find very interesting, I don’t know why. Maybe it’s the simplicity or maybe it’s the way each song matches it’s title so perfectly. ‘Hush’, ‘Gaze’, ‘Bloom, ‘Break’ and ‘Blur’ are the tracks that make up this little album. I love each of those words. I know that statement sounds rather elementary but I feel like those words have such a strong meaning on their own, it only makes sense that there be a song named for each of them. @LeahLovecat
