I went to Pianos on a Wednesday, May 8th to see LODRO, Total Slacker, TWEENS, and Drowners, but since it was at capacity I couldn’t get in until Total Slacker finished so I only really ended up seeing TWEENS and a couple minutes of Drowners. Tweens are a trashy pop three-piece consisting of the members BB tween, Jerri queen, Dabney teen. They’re from Cincinnati, OH and had just opened for The Breeders a couple nights before. One of my pink haired girlfriends/dance partners told me that some dude went into a record store in Cincinnati and asked the dude working there what band from Cincinnati he thought should open for The Breeders at their Webster Hall show, and he said Tweens. I’m not sure how true that is, but it’s a pretty cool story. They’re super punky boppy and poppy and had this one cool slower instrumental song I really liked.
On Thursday 5/9 I went to the 1.21 Gigawatts Issue 5 release party @ 285 Kent with Chappo, Dead Stars, Slonk Donkerson, Jangula and Heeny. The first 100 people in there got cool free Gigawatts pins. It was also Slonk Donkerson’s Cassette Release for their EP Watching Every Channel at Once. I dragged my poor gimpy boyfriend along with me who had sprained his ankle the week before while he was playing at 285 Kent. Good thing there was some weird computer chair with wheels on it to push him around in or else I wouldn’t have had any fun. That’s not true…it’s hard not to have fun while Slonk Donkerson are playing. They sound very fresh and genuine, like they don’t really give a fuck and get sweaty and have a member who sort of head bangs like a metalhead even though they’re not even remotely close to being metal. Dead Stars were also a lot of fun and did a good cover of a Nirvana classic. Check out the new issue of 1.21 Gigawatts HERE.
Kramer Presents….Milk Dick, Lunchbox, Sharkmuffin and The Lesbians was on Friday May 10th @ Muchmore’s. I gave free tarot card readings near the door and there was this super old television Kramer and me found on the street that only plays static and Justin Timberlake sometimes sat in the window of Muchmore’s that had a cardboard cutout that said ‘Kramer Presents’ taped onto it. It smelt a little funny.
The Lesbians sound like if the first lineup of Pink Floyd decided to turn into a funk band and their bass player looks like she’s dating every other member of the band. Milk Dick are still one of my all time favorite Brooklyn bands. They’re funny and simple, just like their band name.
The 3rd issue of Fuck, New York also came out at this show, which you can read HERE.
I happen to live a few blocks away from Muchmore’s, and sometimes I like to ride my razor scooter up and down Havermyer ave, so I ended up listening to the band Dog Water Saturday night (5/11) while seeing how many figure 8s I could make with my scooter before I got dizzy. Listening to music outside of Muchmore’s is actually a really nice experience. Dog Water is good scootering music.
There was a sweet mother’s day Backyard BBQ at 94 Evergreen on Sunday May 12th with Girl Toy, Sharkmuffin, Knucklewagon (from Boston), and Designer (from Boston). Girl Toy took full advantage of moms getting in for free and Beatrice brought her mom (all the way from London!!). There was a trash can fire, it was super windy, and there were hot dogs. The End.
