Tallahassee, Ben Lear, New Beings @ Public Assembly

Join us tonight at Public Assembly in Brooklyn to see some of the most talented bands around.  Our specific and unconditional love for Ben Lear’s Lillian, and its stunning live performance should be enough to get you out of the house tonight, but if it’s not, he’ll be supported by New Beings and Tallahassee.  The show will be warm and intimate, just like we like it, so bring your smiling faces and share a beer with us.

Families (Best New Music)

Families by Ben Lear   (October 22, 2010)

Ben Lear’s first bandcamp release proves to be as, if not more rewarding than his most recent work, Lillian: A Folk Opera (another impeccable album).  It’s slightly more catchy (which only means it’s more structured) and slightly more digestible (in length) than Lillian, but there’s something beautiful about this simplicity.  The vocals feel far more raw, in a Neil Young sort of way and the album, overall, sings an honest tune poetically and melodically.

It’s hard to maintain your own voice when your in a genre that demands outdoing some of the greatest composers of our time (Andrew Bird, Sufjan Stevens, Owen Pallet).  I’m not quite sure Lear has outdone these greats, but he’s certainly held his own creating a beautiful composition, crafting string sections along with his band and structuring his moments cleverly.
