Donor Blues EP

1576670415-1Donor Blues EP by Shakey Graves (Austin, Texas)

This is warmth and comfort, it is sweet country living, it is ups and downs, and long days with pleasant nights, its don’t stand so close to and come sit next to me by the, it is freedom. ‘Doe, Jane‘ slides into the airwaves, perfection. There is something here that teases my memory of some of the more somber tracks from Stadium Archadium, it has that smooth locomotion of a track like ‘Snow (Hey Oh)‘. Your vocal aesthetic has great taste. Hooray for Tascam 4 tracks, shitty mics, and outdated recording software. Humans should probably listen to more music like this. @dingusrecords

Floating Feather

1700524340-1Floating Feather by Fox and The Bird   (Dallas, TX)

I think it’s safe to say that I experienced Fox and The Bird as they should be for the first time, live and unplugged in both a backyard BBQ and a living room in Austin, TX. Leaving downtown Austin during SXSW and joining this band among numerous other talents for a BBQ was quite possibly my favorite memory of the week; great food, even better people and music all night at a quaint Texas home. Fox and The Bird were playing minus their female vocal element but the guys held down every song as well as any folk trio ever could, ‘Floating Feather’ being a song that stuck with me all the way home to Brooklyn. @thinknotsleep

Health is the New Drug

3201422341-1Health is the New Drug by The Boxing Lesson   (Austin, TX)

Austin band The Boxing Lesson quite literally sound as though they are exploding onto the US music scene. A mix of glam, New York-style punk and classic rock, this is a powerful force of musical nature that I think rock fans have been waiting for, whether they know it or not. Chugging guitars and drums, ripping guitar solos, and soaked vocals set the tone for their sound but do not define the energy these players conjure so naturally. I’ll put money down that Jack White invests in this band in one way or another, someday soon. @thinknotsleep

Take The Elevator

2579122490-1Take The Elevator by The Harms   (Austin, Texas)

Austin’s, The Harms, stare you down. Right in the eye. They’re here to make you move, to make your head bob up and down and side to side. ‘Take The Elevator‘ oozes confidence and spunk. No doubt about it, this is a band who have come to shake things up, so open your arms and welcome them. [Free Download@LeahLovecat

2

2676234465-12 by Unknown Relatives   (Austin, Texas)

Unknown Relatives are an oasis in the desert of really crappy bands. Was that not eloquent enough? Whoops. Well who has time for being eloquent when rock is on the line?! 2 is just enough cool and just enough sweet to pull you in and tie up your heartstrings. This is my pick of the week, or at least my pick of today. This is A GREAT PICK. @LeahLovecat

We All Die Young

artworks-000040825000-sij81x-t500x500We All Die Young by Zorch   (Austin, TX)

Upbeat and heavy on the synth, ‘We All Die Young’ is a very ear catching single coming from Austin experimental duo Zorch off their upcoming new album titled Zzoorrcchh. Ambient, spacey vocal production and keyboard riffs over heavy drumming makes their sound very unique and demands more than one listen to fully digest it. A little more post-punk electronica than I would generally gravitate towards but I was intrigued to say the least when I discovered it streaming on Hype Machine. Recently picked up by Sargent House, home to Omar Rodriguez Lopez, Fang Island and more, we’ll be seeing a lot more of Zorch in 2013. @thinknotsleep

Foe Destroyer

2798250856-1Foe Destroyer by Foe Destroyer   (Austin, Texas)

Woah. Listening to the first two seconds of ‘Strut’ was enough for my lips to utter that very word. There is a little more than what meets the eye with Foe DestroyerWith the sweet sounds of pop come garage rock undertones catapult you into your day. The transition from track one to track two is easily the greatest example of this. You have the calm and cool ‘Strut’ followed by the fuzzy yells of ‘Memo’. You wake up easy only to have your bones rattled. It’s an electric jump to your heart and really, the only way things should get done. @LeahLovecat

Low Times

Cass. Insert- 2 up Laser FrontLow Times by Low Times   (Austin, Texas)

It’s time for love songs with Leah Lovecat, a segment of pure rarity. Austin based, Low Times, have released a self titled album that has tugged gently on my heartstrings. ‘I Totally Love You’ was the first song to catch my eyes and ears. I’m not about to get sappy on you but I can’t resist a good love song, especially one that’s a little out of the ordinary. The name itself is even really cute. It’s almost as if it’s from one awkward twenty something to another, all wrapped in colorful and impressive album art. It’s a gift I’d be more than willing to accept. And I have. @LeahLovecat

Egyptian Wrinkle

Cover Boy Friend LpEgyptian Wrinkle by Boy Friend   (Austin, Texas)

Good morning all! I hope your slumbers were sound and your dreams were of the magical variety. Now, I have a little piece of magic for you. It’s beautiful and dreamy, the second you close your eyes you begin to see the stars. Boy Friend’s Egyptian Wrinkle synth pop has you on your knees and praying. Yeah, you heard me. You’re praying for beauty, for love, for everything that has been sewn into Egyptian Wrinkle. So what if it doesn’t come true? As long as you continue to fill your ears with Boy Friend’s music, you’ll have all the wonder that this world holds. @LeahLovecat

East India Rush

3827867836-1‘East India Rush’ by Act Rights   (Austin, Texas)

Act Rights are a force to be reckoned with. Sounding like a wave about ready to crash into you, ‘East India Rush‘ is rock and roll on it’s best day. The Austin based band use their howling vocals and reckless guitars to hook you and reel you in. Sorry, looks like you’re going to get caught in the net. Trust me, you’ll like it in there. @LeahLovecat
