Tonight! The Jean Jackets Release a Record / Everyone Get Drunk at Muchmore’s

Well last night I went to bed around 8am.  Now it’s three in the afternoon on a show day and the juices are flowing as I climb out from under the sheets because today is Sour Stash.  Dingus has been teaming up with The Snake to bring you free DIY shows all year and it’s Harvey Eyeballs‘ time to run some thunder.  The Jean Jackets will be co-headlining and releasing their record- a record recorded at the famous Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen.  This morning, the first single leaked on their basists Soundcloud site and on the bands tumblr; an old track we know from demo but easily one of my favorites ‘Myth of Sisyphus‘ shows off a puffed chest while letting individuality shine within insecurity.  Alfonso Velez and Carroll will be opening the show starting at 930pm but be sure to get their early, you’ll want to nurture that buzz for the first set.  [Facebook Event@Dingusonmusic

The Need to Know & Criminal

‘The Need to Know’ & ‘Criminal’ by Alfonso Velez   (March 10, 2012) *

Alfonso Velez has been spiraling down the hole.  Writing songs for his demo bandcamp that paint a far darker, far more disturbed composer at work.  Velez has never had a problem getting out his emotions, but they used to be friendly.  Songs like ‘Teddy‘ and ‘Barcelona Birds‘ introduced a singer struck by the miracle of life; an optimistic rider cast into the vast desert, ready to holster his pistol and get zen.  But now, Alfonso’s getting frustrated, jaded, spiteful and above all apathetic.  These “demo” recordings have been slowing stacking, testing the waters for the next full length, and shit, are we excited.

Alfonso Velez

If there’s a New York city rock guru alive and well these days, it’s certainly Alfonso Velez.  Perfectly pacing his live performances, when Velez takes the stage, nothing feels more natural.  Rockwood Music Hall is his Meadowlands, so come out on March 10th and be a part of one of the warmest shows in town.  Get the details from the omniscient facebook.

I haven’t yet been able to feel the magic that is the renegotiation of Alfonso Velez live, in fact I wasn’t even confident enough to yet call it magic, but while digging through the Oresti Music vimeo my original assumptions proved true.  Masterfully (always) captured by videographer Oresti Tsonopoulos, I give you ‘Miles’ performed live at the Rockwood Music Hall.

DEMOS

DEMOS by Alfonso Velez   (October 13, 2011) *

The last time I sat down for a drink with guitarist/singer/song-writer, Alfonso Velez, I asked him what his plan was for his sophomore release.  I insinuated that, although his eponymous debut was brilliant, he would have to reinvent himself.  He promised he would, and he did.  The two tracks you can hear here, taken live and unedited, show a Velez who, has taken yet another step toward the finish line.  If there is one.  Demos is fresh and new; it’s a Velez I’m not used to after experiencing his somber Rockwood performances in the past and I feel challenged.  He’ll be playing tomorrow in NYC.

The Memo EP

The Memo EP by Alfonso Velez   (September 19, 2011)

Alfonso Velez and the Rockwood Music Hall go together like ham and cheese.  His twisting vocal melodies and somber guitar lamentations might as well be the soundtrack for the venue as they capture the the mood beautifully while I sip my bourbon.   Alfonso’s song-writing, although wonderful captured on recording, is meant to be enjoyed live so take the time to head to his bandcamp today to grab the Memo EP, his most recent live recording, a recording that playfully rearranges tracks and whimsically

Teddy (Sunday’s Best)

‘Teddy’ by Alfonso Velez   (February 9, 2011)

Last week we posted the live version of this song, which is nearly a complete renovation of the original.  Well, here it is, the studio recording.  ’Teddy’ is one of our favorite tracks.  It hits a wide range of emotional highs and lows while never breaking melody.  From moments containing only piano and vocals to entire string arrangements, this bright Velez track is the highlight of the album by only a hair.

‘Teddy’ live by Alfonso Velez   (February 10, 2011)

‘Teddy’ is by far one of my favorite tracks off the self-titled Alfonso Velez album and now you can pick up all of the live recordings on his bandcamp.  On this track in particular, Velez answers his live crowd with a dynamically diverse take on one of his most epic tracks.  Playing without his string section, Alfonso somehow manages to create the same monumental effects.
