DOPEWAVE IS REAL

There’s a wordy justification for the genre DOPEWAVE on their Bandcamp page.  Though I’ve never been convinced to call electronic music anything other than that.  ”Dopewave is an experiment in genre creation. Birthed out of a new group of young producers creating electronic sounds, that are simultaneously like nothing, and like everything you’ve ever heard.” I’m not entirely sure why I needed to read that, when I should just feel it, as the album notes read “Talking about music is a much different experience than listening to music.”

Despite the fun I’m having in teasing their explanations, there is some real glimmer of self-doubt there; when in all truthiness, each song on the compilation impresses on an instinctual level.  From taking ‘I Know There’s an Answer‘ and grinding it into a raw and completely unrecognizable dance track to the more empathetic ‘When it’s For You‘, DOPEWAVE IS REAL is 100% entertaining.  Trap influences unleash the laid back element along side the paralyzing synth intensity that carries the compilation.  Intensity carries it through to conclusion, never skipping a beat, even as your traditional 2/4 dance beats fade for intriguing experimentation. Friday, May 17th was the first night of the first annual Kramer Presents…LIVE GAL FEST @ The Living Gallery with Big Ups, Cum Blood, Dark Room, Sharkmuffin, Villager & Lunchbox. I was really blown away by the confidence and stage presence of each band. Big Ups had people slipping on beer and piling on top of each other, one of the members of Cum Blood was making vodka smoothies naked, Dark Room had like 10 girls get in for free by claiming they were apart of the band and the frontdude of Lunchbox performed his second show of the night with a sprained ankle.  It was really inspiring and really loud and really weird. 

Saturday, May 18th was the second night of LIVE GAL FEST with the bands Sunflower Bean, Haybaby, Hippy, & Turnip King. Night 2 was strobe light city. Take a listen below and maybe you’ll know what I mean.

SIKEFEST @ Knitting Factory was on Sunday, May 19th with an insane number of bands. I unfortunately was a bit distracted during the day because our drummer quit that morning before the show. We were still determined to play and the promoter of the event was very supportive so we sat in the green room and had a few different drummers listen to 5 songs we were going to attempt to make the Sharkmuffin set. The drummer from Nashville’s Fancy Tramp was awesome enough to step in and save the day! Since that day we replaced our old drummer with this really chill chick. You can check out Sharkmuffin’s debut as an all girl band @ Bushwick Open Studios in the Boars Head Parking Lot on June 1st!

This is the closet to the Earth the moon will get all year along with there being a straight line between the sun and the Earth, so you know shit will be getting intense. ‘Heartstrings’ by Citadel   (Philadelphia, PA)

As lovely as an introduction can be to a song, ‘Heartstrings‘ the latest single by Philly indie-poppers Citadel opens in a familiar and welcoming way. Deliberately over-produced drums with delicate piano under the opening melody, this first thirty seconds could land them song placements for anything from the next Ryan Gosling film to a Toyota commercial. Incredibly accessible and clever in style, the band never strays from their garage pop form yet has still produced a song catchy and unique with all the different layers of attitude throughout. Definitely take a minute to check out the interesting and fitting video they have to go with the single here. Dig it. @thinknotsleep

Packaged with the perfect blend of drive, cheese, and fun, the new album from La Nina Hilo has pure pop appeal. Back with an increased sense of maturity for composition this here is a band that has achieved something pivitol with this second album. They have proven to posses the ability to look inward and develop consistently, maintaining remnants of themselves from Prologo, while attaining new heights through exploration. @dingusrecords

Coming from the appropriately titled album Ambient Works: Year 1 is a cut called ‘I’ve Seen Things‘ by UK group Bruised Skies. The background of this group or individual is as mysterious as the sounds being produced; bells and chimes sprinkle down like rain drops in slow motion while soft keyboard pads and nearly inaudible, spacious drum hits keep a reminder of what time feels like. Ambient, chill, and strikingly soulful, this track may be what you need today in order to sit back and collect yourself before becoming lost in the anxiety of the work week. Pageantry have released a heck of a great single. ‘Friends Of The Year’ is folk pop straight out of Texas and I can see why it has been called “the most promising track to come out of Denton”. Its a sweet track with sweeping math rock qualities sure enough to catch your ear. This is a song for every man, woman and child. @LeahLovecat
