Single Release: We Are Alive

Golden-YouthWe Are Alive by Golden Youth   (Sacramento, CA)

From the opening chirps of woodwinds to the whistles of other orchestral instruments, ‘We Are Alive‘ the new single from Sacramento indie-pop duo Golden Youth, flows forth with positivity and youthful energy. The two songwriters, Stephanie Lauren and Kyle Monroe are currently promoting the May 28th release of their debut album Quiet Frame; Wild Light that has already begun gathering a ton of hype from the likes of Nylon and more. The song is light and poppy but also packed with intricate layers of drums, vocals, strings, keyboards and more to make the song come alive. This single has come at just the right time with numerous Fun-esque youth anthems climbing the charts, it is likely that we will hear this track pouring from car windows and backyard parties with the approaching warm season. @thinknotsleep

Operator

UnknownOperator by The Fleeting Ends   (Philadelphia, PA)

Soaring pop strings aligned with oohs, ahhs, piano stabs and a snare drum that sounds like a mallet taken to a cardboard box, The Fleeting Ends are the butterflies you had on the first date with your significant other. Their latest track ‘Operator‘ is a sound depiction of where their collective head is at; groove based, 60′s retro rock carried gracefully by lead vocalist Matt Vantine and a wall of harmonic arrangements to allow every chorus to take flight. This Philly band is clearly following in the footsteps of pop greats before them like Dr. Dog, The Beatles, and Sufjan Stevens; undeniably a tried and true style but also a hard shoe to fill. Pressure is on and chances are these dudes can hang. @thinknotsleep

Surrender

4140933531-1Surrender by Lockets   (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)

Lockets‘ is a track made from beguiling beauty and wonder. Synthy bedroom pop is the key factor here. As you set your eyes upon the album art, stare into the purples and oranges that make up the background, I honestly believe that it’s the music in physical form. Its kind of strange how a picture can sum up 3 minutes and 47 seconds of sound but, here you have it. This is a late night track, please play at dusk and add it to your playlist immediately. Blowout

1967986880-1Blowout by The So So Glos   (Brooklyn, New York)

Brooklyn heavyweights, The So So Glos, are finally hitting it big time and they have a killer single to back up their new high end status. Blowout contains the high energy, high fun track, ‘Son of An American’, that mentions things like freedom and ice cream. Things that summers are made of and longed for. The So So Glo’s are such a treat to see live. The crowd loves them almost as much as they love the crowd. Everyone goes absolutely crazy and sings the words to every song that gets played. If you ever make your way to Brooklyn, make sure put seeing our beloved punk rockers on your list of things to do. @LeahLovecat

Single Release: Something to Blame

3251365355-1‘Something to Blame’ by The Gradients   (Brooklyn, New York)

This afternoon, rock and roll greats, The Gradients released their latest single and none too late- ‘Something to Blame’.  It’s one of those tracks that you’ve certainly heard live (especially if you’re at our parties). Now brace yourself for the polished version which maintains the same intensity as the performance.  @Dingusonmusic

Plastic Kingdom

4288384397-1‘Plastic Kingdom’ by Nola Wren   (New York, New York)

I feel like I’m gonna get called into the bosses office for this one but you know what? I like it, so too bad. ‘Plastic Kingdom’ is poppy and dancey and there is no shame in that. Sometimes we need a little something light, something you don’t have to think about. You just listen to it and it makes you crack a wee smile. This is that little something. Go ahead and grin, it’s ok. @LeahLovecat

Spanish Republican Soldiers In French Retirement Homes

4121941925-1Spanish Republican Soldiers In French Retirement Homes by The Suicide of Western Culture   (Barcelona)

Breathy, distant choir vocal samples; steam weezing out of under-regulated smoke stacks of industrial Europe; glitches of sound from televisions in broken store front windows; The Suicide of Western Culture. It is often times hard to speculate what is in a name, but with the ambient, industrial soundscapes created by TSOWC, this is a perfect score to an Orwellian sci-fi film. Politically apocalyptic in both name and song titles, this is a deep dive to take into electronic music on a weekday morning but I’m glad I did. Digital toms and thick synthesizers march and pump like a meltdown of society and personal anxiety, a ride we fear to take but are quick to welcome in the form of visionary art. @thinknotsleep

Propellers/Bad Vibes

3897078706-1Propellers/Bad Vibes by The Frowning Clouds   (Spain)

I think I just found my summer pick. The Frowning Clouds’ garage rock single, Propellers/Bad Vibesis 100% warm weather material. This almost reminds me of what the Beach Boys would sound like if they were a band established in 2013.  Tell your boss you can’t go to work today, you’re way too busy going to the beach and going on drives in convertibles. @LeahLovecat

About A Boy

408399863-1‘About A Boy’ by Katty Winne   (Maceió, Brazil)

Katty Winne reminds me of nearly every female fronted grungy band in the 90′s. This is a very cool thing. ‘About A Boy‘ is a love song of sorts, talking about a girl and a boy and only having each other. It’s sweet without being to saturated in happy go lucky lyrics, which can typically be the case for love songs. This has a little more guts, its not at all wimpy and I like it that way. @LeahLovecat
