Single Release: The Initiation {Mykki Blanco}

artworks-000047701797-yvhflh-t500x500‘The Initiation’ by Mykki Blanco   (New York, New York)

Blanco is back with another single pushing the limits of the word “intense”.  If you’re not caught up on the anti-rap career, I’d suggest familiarizing yourself deeply because a full conceptual understanding of ‘The Initiation‘ requires much more than a singular listen.  Blanco has made a name for himself by bending gender lines and throwing the results in societies face- it’s worked.  His latest ignores protocol and reaches deep into the lower intestine to pull out a guttural fight song that any killer would gladly take the ring to. @Dingusonmusic

Single Release: Francs {Benny Francs}

artworks-000048017966-5m2cff-t500x500‘Francs’ by Benny Francs   (Chicago, Illinois)

Hip hop is a tough genre for the DIY.  Perhaps because faithful rap is born on the street.  Sure, you can go the bitches, money, fame route, but I’d like to think that the world is getting sick of that falsity.  Real rap has a soul defined by struggle (in fact nearly all truthful music is born from struggle).  It comes from our declining cities where most are trapped as mice on a spinning wheel aching for a moment of peace and production.  Hip hop is a touch genre for the DIY because those involved in the struggle, often, are not your tech savvy upper class.  But Benny Franc has the flow.  It comes from experience and though this is his first release- you can taste the personality in ‘Francs‘. Single Release: Surf Wobble Waves 89 & Punk Mania 107 {Space}

a2920524881_2Surf Wobble Waves 89 by Space   (Los Angeles, California?..)

A lil dub, splahes of reggaeton, and a whole lotta nar nar, makes for a fantastically lose yourself in a moment of careless fun feelings. A future track for an animated parody of the twist dance competition from pulp fiction. Aggressive and lazer sharp, a super slick electronic take on an old fun riff that every garage band fools around with at some point in their career. Part of a strange collection of singles from Space, who they are and if they are even from LA is my new fascination, I swear to commit to figuring this one out. @dingusrecords

a3770886933_2Punk Mania 107 by Space   (Los Angeles, Maybe..)

Seriously though, whoever this is has some talent about. Love the diversity here, the playful nature of the combination of thematics. The simple driving nature of something that feels more like live music then programmed rigidity. There is a balance here, dark and light, electronic and acoustic, simple and complex. I truly encourage you to explore 9 singles on the bandcamp of Space, it is unique and quite splendid. If you happen to catch this guy (or gal) at Melford Hall Park in Sudbury, UK on May 25th please tell them to send something over to dingusrecords@gmail, this mystery will be solved. @dingusrecords

Single Release: My Body is Dumb [The Great American Novel]

a1289334133_10‘My Body is Dumb’ by The Great American Novel   (Brooklyn, New York) *

The Great American Novel is a powerhouse rock band from homefield Brooklyn.  The chorus’ consist of some of the most single handedly catchy and melodic lines, dredging up a deep well of influencers.  Well, ‘My Body is Dumb‘ is no different, in fact it’s the track that finally convinced me of their “powerhouse” status- leading up to the release of their next LP, slotted for any day now (this spring). Single Release: Feeling Right [Happy Lives]

3177198498-1‘Feeling Right’ by Happy Lives   (New York, New York) *

It’s a smart song. Despite our previous ambitions, Happy Lives has released a single that strays so far from their original sound that you might wonder if its a joke in entirety.  What it lacks: 1. The intense machine sound brought on by the sampling, 2. The complex layering of synth layers, 3. Lande’s signature rock shout.  It’s a demonstration of aesthetic prowess.  ’Feeling Right‘ reaches new levels of conceptual thought in the bands embryonic career.  Without regard for their previous EP, Beel, (Beale) Lande and Holbrook have crafted a track that leaves a singular question on the tip of your tongue- what next?  I didn’t think I’d be posting today as I run from meeting to meeting in preparation for the coding of our new website, but this couldn’t wait.  ’Feeling Right’ will either be remembered as a pinacle moment of clarity that lead to a diverse career, or a stand alone flop that stuck out like a deformity in an otherwise homogeneous discography. Marry Me Annie

2154987564-1Marry Me Annie by Modern Merchant   (Brooklyn by way of Connecticut)

I wasn’t sure how I felt about the latest EP by Modern Merchant upon first listen until I reached track three, a slow grooving, dreamy pop song called ‘Marry Me Annie‘. The song is in the vein of Grizzly Bear and Local Natives, no question, but the delicate horn based rhythm section at the top is infectious. Blankets of harmonized vocals swoop in shortly after and the lead melody immediately had my head bobbing in a Jim James fashion, entrancing in style. The song dynamically moves from section to section, sonically telling a tale for those who stumble on the play button. I’m glad to provide that button today and I hope you’ll download their EP right after. @thinknotsleep

Single Release: We Are Alive

Golden-YouthWe Are Alive by Golden Youth   (Sacramento, CA)

From the opening chirps of woodwinds to the whistles of other orchestral instruments, ‘We Are Alive‘ the new single from Sacramento indie-pop duo Golden Youth, flows forth with positivity and youthful energy. The two songwriters, Stephanie Lauren and Kyle Monroe are currently promoting the May 28th release of their debut album Quiet Frame; Wild Light that has already begun gathering a ton of hype from the likes of Nylon and more. The song is light and poppy but also packed with intricate layers of drums, vocals, strings, keyboards and more to make the song come alive. This single has come at just the right time with numerous Fun-esque youth anthems climbing the charts, it is likely that we will hear this track pouring from car windows and backyard parties with the approaching warm season. @thinknotsleep

Operator

UnknownOperator by The Fleeting Ends   (Philadelphia, PA)

Soaring pop strings aligned with oohs, ahhs, piano stabs and a snare drum that sounds like a mallet taken to a cardboard box, The Fleeting Ends are the butterflies you had on the first date with your significant other. Their latest track ‘Operator‘ is a sound depiction of where their collective head is at; groove based, 60′s retro rock carried gracefully by lead vocalist Matt Vantine and a wall of harmonic arrangements to allow every chorus to take flight. This Philly band is clearly following in the footsteps of pop greats before them like Dr. Dog, The Beatles, and Sufjan Stevens; undeniably a tried and true style but also a hard shoe to fill. Pressure is on and chances are these dudes can hang. @thinknotsleep
