Asymmetrical World [Coatle]

3045385278-1Asymmetrical World by Coatle   (London, England)

Sometimes when I listen to a band the thought of “wow, that was a really tight recording” pops into my head. That happened while I was listening to Asymmetrical World. Every track is just so on the spot and beautiful. There is a really nice harmony between garage rock and electro/power pop that makes Coatle quite the commodity. Its rare to find a band that does this combination well but when you do, its important to spread their music like wildfire. [Free Download] @LeahLovecat

Slim Fit Boot Cut [Boreal Hills]

2630392187-1Slim Fit Boot Cut by Boreal Hills   (St. Louis, Missouri)

Slim Fit Boot Cut is full of short, quick punk numbers that are sure to awaken your senses. Shrill screams and wails fill the spaces that make up the garage rock EP. Boreal Hills remind me of what the cool kids in 1955 would listen to. Let’s all get out our leather jackets and denim, hang by the bridge and listen to some rock and roll. It sounds like a good plan to me. @LeahLovecat

Dead Ass [Lil Kids]

1226751443-1Dead Ass by Lil Kids   (Brooklyn, New York) *

Brooklyn rap conman Adam Kane and production prodigy Nick Adams are back again, this time- with a new sound for Dead Ass.  It’s a rap album that samples (and often uses live recorded) rock elements flawlessly, without sounding forced, without sounding like a gimmick.  At least half of these tracks you’ve heard live if you’ve been existing in the Brooklyn DIY sphere, especially if you’ve been attending our shows.  Lil Kids does it again, and I know what I’m riding the subway to for the next few weeks. Gory Daze [Tonkapuma + Times Neue Roman]

2129353845-1Gory Daze by Tonkapuma + Times Neue Roman   (Toronto, Canada)

Oh future rap, all you foolish types whom are all stuck up in the old-school, who hate on the current and love to live in antiquity, you are missing out. Open up those venetian blinds you’ve got on and let your ears decide, instead of that overdeveloped sense of style and seen you have. This is The Kills and Aesop Rock and Nothing, I should stop making comparisons forever, maybe Die Antwoord too. Its frantic basement punk hop, come play a show in bk with LIL KIDs. The Void [The Graham Situation]

752309519-1The Void by The Graham Situation   (Gothenburg, Sweden)*

I took to The Graham Situation so quickly. I’m always picky when it comes to more darker, gothier lo-fi so I guess you might say that I was a little apprehensive when the time came to lend my ears. With influences ranging from the Arctic Monkeys to Queen, its easy to hear little bits and pieces of their musical influences laced between their own tracks. The Void is dark with a hopeful underlay, psychedelic lo-fi, if you may. There is an endearing quality that pulls you in and for the 40 or so minutes it takes to listen to the album, you’re pulled into your own little world. It’s a trip. @LeahLovecat

Hands’ EP

1696615218-1Hands’ EP by The Top   (Brooklyn, NY)*

The fact that most of you have probably never heard of The Top is an unfortunate and curious reality. As the Hands’ EP runs its’ course, I acknowledge that reality and write this to you, with hopes of turning the music onto even one more fan, one more pair of ears to then share with their friends. The overall production is hot; most noticeably the vocals peak with a warmth we all crave as lovers of Nick Drake and The Beach Boys, but also from the crispy sound of the drums that groove and break up perfectly amongst the piano, acoustic guitar and electric guitar chinks on the 2 and 4. The band certainly accomplishes their retro pop ambitions and there is no reason they shouldn’t already have toured the US with bands like Dr. Dog and The Walkmen. This is the sort of band that fans will without any hesitation take under their wings and deliver to other music lovers with glee. It’s one thing to be told by hyped up music blogs and taste makers that you should be following a cool new band, and it’s another altogether to hear a band like The Top and pass them along out of sheer disbelief that they haven’t hit it big yet. I hope this EP finds you well and that you will pass it along like a peace pipe. @thinknotsleep

Psychotic Teenage Supermodels

1174178518-1Psychotic Teenage Supermodels by Sugarpuss   (Perth, Washington)

Normally I would never do this, but in this instance these self stated album descriptions are far too befitting. “Sugarpuss’s debut EP is a small collection of songs that vary so much from each other in style, subject, and mood that it closely mirrors the unpredictable lava flow of chemicals that occur in the mind of the common psychotic teen:” ‘Masquerade‘, lingers hard, from its western hipster pop verse to its otherworldly smooth sultry chorus, come to Brooklyn, Now, Please? @dingusrecords

Brainwater EP

2251504640-1Brainwater EP by Tim Fitz   (Sydney, Australia) *

Tim Fitz is a name that sticks with me from the earliest days of our DIY search.  It was a while back that the Beforetime EP was released and we dubbed it with the honorary Best New Music label.  Before the days of using Feedly as a method for keeping up with our favorite artists Bandcamp pages it would seem that we missed Brainwater.  The leading single is ‘Mr Streetwise’ a jolly pop song that slams the piano as hard as the next guy- but as always there’s something somber peaking out from beneath as emphasized by subtle use of electronic practice.  As much of Fitz’ work is concerned, the album is full of regrets, wishes and other normal human emotions emoted on a profound level.  The album is meant to be enjoyed from cover to cover as previously deserved and delivers no less on the thrills than his first.  As always, there crowning achievement is a fluid movement between electronic aggression and acoustic beauty.  Again, well done. The Broadcaster EP

2337280925-1The Broadcaster EP by Charles Keith Sztyk   (Union, NJ)

Music Monday for me begins at home in New Jersey, both physically and musically. Fighting off a cold due to inconsistent Spring weather and sifting through music to feature today brought me to one of my favorite songwriters, Charles Keith Sztyk. He has been featured here in the past but now with a full 4-song EP to push, more praise from the DIY Dingus council is only appropriate. Knowing the many sides of Charles makes me approach his recordings with a bias but also very open to where production can take his music in alternate directions. This EP is full of distorted lo-fi vocals and dirty guitar, where as I’m used to the angelic voice displayed at live shows. This is only more reason for fans to experience the music not only digitally but at their local venue too. The songs are dynamic and all have their own strengths, flowing from one to another and speaking for themselves with powerful lyrics, melody and performance. I guess that is easier to maintain when you record every instrument yourself as did Charlie. This is a dark yet uplifting batch of songs that a broad demographic can and will relate to but certainly an EP to be embraced by fans of M. Ward and other indie-folk modern icons. @thinknotsleep

Roses EP

3408118510-1Roses EP by Roses   (Providence, Rhode Island)

In the wake of a weird weekend emerges Roses. Sweet, sweet rock and roll is the main ingredient to their charming magic. Roses is just that Monday morning EP you need to shake off the dust from the Friday-Sunday shenanigans you my have came across. “Influenced” by “kissing and hugging”, Roses are sure to give you the pick-me-up you need in order to float through the day. Not just float. You’re feet are never going to touch the ground, you’re going to be walking on air. @LeahLovecat
