Gory Daze [Tonkapuma + Times Neue Roman]

2129353845-1Gory Daze by Tonkapuma + Times Neue Roman   (Toronto, Canada)

Oh future rap, all you foolish types whom are all stuck up in the old-school, who hate on the current and love to live in antiquity, you are missing out. Open up those venetian blinds you’ve got on and let your ears decide, instead of that overdeveloped sense of style and seen you have. This is The Kills and Aesop Rock and Nothing, I should stop making comparisons forever, maybe Die Antwoord too. Its frantic basement punk hop, come play a show in bk with LIL KIDs. Single Release: Feeling Right [Happy Lives]

3177198498-1‘Feeling Right’ by Happy Lives   (New York, New York) *

It’s a smart song. Despite our previous ambitions, Happy Lives has released a single that strays so far from their original sound that you might wonder if its a joke in entirety.  What it lacks: 1. The intense machine sound brought on by the sampling, 2. The complex layering of synth layers, 3. Lande’s signature rock shout.  It’s a demonstration of aesthetic prowess.  ’Feeling Right‘ reaches new levels of conceptual thought in the bands embryonic career.  Without regard for their previous EP, Beel, (Beale) Lande and Holbrook have crafted a track that leaves a singular question on the tip of your tongue- what next?  I didn’t think I’d be posting today as I run from meeting to meeting in preparation for the coding of our new website, but this couldn’t wait.  ’Feeling Right’ will either be remembered as a pinacle moment of clarity that lead to a diverse career, or a stand alone flop that stuck out like a deformity in an otherwise homogeneous discography. Brainwater EP

2251504640-1Brainwater EP by Tim Fitz   (Sydney, Australia) *

Tim Fitz is a name that sticks with me from the earliest days of our DIY search.  It was a while back that the Beforetime EP was released and we dubbed it with the honorary Best New Music label.  Before the days of using Feedly as a method for keeping up with our favorite artists Bandcamp pages it would seem that we missed Brainwater.  The leading single is ‘Mr Streetwise’ a jolly pop song that slams the piano as hard as the next guy- but as always there’s something somber peaking out from beneath as emphasized by subtle use of electronic practice.  As much of Fitz’ work is concerned, the album is full of regrets, wishes and other normal human emotions emoted on a profound level.  The album is meant to be enjoyed from cover to cover as previously deserved and delivers no less on the thrills than his first.  As always, there crowning achievement is a fluid movement between electronic aggression and acoustic beauty.  Again, well done. The Hell Under the Ground

1268922377-1The Hell Under the Ground by Hemlock Shaw   (Brooklyn, New York) *

The latest from Hemlock Shaw digs further into experimental root, pulling you in slowly through the introduction ‘It’s Battle Time’.  Weirdness levels rise as an Animal Collective structure clashes with the darkness of Tom Waits’ later career.  It’s an album that’s taken weeks to digest and even at that length, I still find myself stumped for words.  There is a dynamic game being played that expands past the traditional idea of “making you nod your head”- it’s a compulsion to bring atmospheric music into a slightly more tangible form, though as the album progresses we’re dragged through his pop influence.  Self-described as “unchill” music, it’s almost as if the composer is challenging you to find something lovable in a dystopian album that counts space and emptiness as much as it praises the audio clash previously described. The Hell Under the Ground is an album based in academic thought, a challenge, a test of faith and clarity. Antics

677695391-1Antics by Vundabar   (United States)

Just when I thought I was going to call it a night, I came across Antics. This is an album. Wrapped up in jangly guitars, indelible guitars and slightly fuzzed vocals, each track has you captivated and you keep your ear to your speakers, for you don’t want to miss a second of it. I immediately downloaded the 10 songs that make up Antics and started playing them back to back. I’m obsessed and I think you’re going to have a very similar reaction. [Free Download@LeahLovecat

Overdone / Eclipse

artworks-000046251810-gcmozx-t500x500‘Overdone’ & ‘Eclipse’ by AtariLife   (Cleveland, Ohio)

I’ll fuck anything Andrea makes.  So when AtariLife started following us on Soundcloud- my cock jumped at the immediate stamp of perfection that the young Parisian producer leaves. I knew it before I read it.  I’m that good.  Well anyone that’s got Andrea on their side, surely has me on their side as well.  So for the R&B moments that were often eluded to, but missed in the instrumental arrangements and remixes of the prodigal musician- here’s ‘Overdone‘ and ‘Eclipse‘.  It’s AtariLife that brings humanity’s touch to the ring.  It’s like Drake, but good.  ”Easy is Overdone” [Free Download@Dingusonmusic

501c(3)

305201680-1’501c(3)’ by Fuck Explorer   (Long Island, New York)

Drifting in an aimless position, this Long Island bred, Animal Collective inspired project takes a more potent aim at funk structures than their influences would with regards for a structural integrity that holds constant throughout the general mood shifts that dictate movement throughout the track.  It’s a pleasant start for diving into the work of Fuck Explorer.  Linning up parts in an ABC fashion without reprise means that it reads like prose, learning from the past and adjusting for the future.  In the very least, ‘501c(3)‘ is a pivotal moment in their discography that defines an honest memory connection. Meet The Mysterious Swaai Boys

2365233849-1Meet The Mysterious Swaai Boys by Swaai Boys   (Brooklyn, New York)

Meet The Mysterious Swaai Boys may just be one of my favorite releases I’ve heard in quite some time. Its the perfect summer album, it has all the great elements needed for the hazy days ahead of us. Its sweet and soft and makes you long for the days where you can just sit in the sun doing nothing, remaining completely content. You can’t possible be in a bad mood while listening to this, there’s no way. You’re made of stone if you can process a bad emotion. [Free Download] @LeahLovecat

Catch Ciphers EP

3838888900-1Catch Ciphers EP by Chocolate Bread   (Union, NJ)

In hopes of keeping this music out in the world for new listeners to hear, an effort fans should take into their own hands due to Chocolate Breads’ indefinite hiatus, I chose this beautiful Spring day to feature the Catch Ciphers EP. The second release from the Union County, NJ band came shortly after their debut full-length …Until My Mind Stretches that helped build one of the most impressive DIY followings the area has seen in recent years. Dozens of packed, high-energy concerts and Summer parties are the way this band is best remembered for those lucky enough to experience their short-lived reign on the top. Take a moment to sift through their albums and enjoy some music made for music’s sake. Chocolate Bread is expected to release a new EP sometime during 2013. [Free Download] @thinknotsleep
