Brooklyn’s very own DIMENSIONS was a band that slipped through my radar for the past year while their combination of inspired ambiance and droning synths evolved organically.   तद्भव is the title of their most recent dual single- where each track title provides more of anthropomorphized manifesto for its growth than a witty insights (‘Folded Moments‘ and ‘Born of That‘).  Though at the end of the day, a band like DIMENSIONS is only ever meant for a niche audience and when I say meant, I feel as if im talking about fate. Single Release: The Initiation {Mykki Blanco}

Blanco is back with another single pushing the limits of the word “intense”.  If you’re not caught up on the anti-rap career, I’d suggest familiarizing yourself deeply because a full conceptual understanding of ‘The Initiation‘ requires much more than a singular listen.  Blanco has made a name for himself by bending gender lines and throwing the results in societies face- it’s worked.  His latest ignores protocol and reaches deep into the lower intestine to pull out a guttural fight song that any killer would gladly take the ring to. @Dingusonmusic

Single Release: Francs {Benny Francs}

Hip hop is a tough genre for the DIY.  Perhaps because faithful rap is born on the street.  Sure, you can go the bitches, money, fame route, but I’d like to think that the world is getting sick of that falsity.  Real rap has a soul defined by struggle (in fact nearly all truthful music is born from struggle).  It comes from our declining cities where most are trapped as mice on a spinning wheel aching for a moment of peace and production.  Hip hop is a touch genre for the DIY because those involved in the struggle, often, are not your tech savvy upper class.  But Benny Franc has the flow.  It comes from experience and though this is his first release- you can taste the personality in ‘Francs‘. THE RELEASE OF GIGAWATTS 1 (PRONOUNCED JIGGA, AS I OFTEN GET IT WRONG) LAST SUMMER MARKED THE BEGINNING OF A NEW STANDARD, A STANDARD THAT REACHED PROFESSIONAL LEVELS WHILE STILL STAYING TRUE TO THE DREAMCHASERS THAT MADE IT ALL POSSIBLE.

ITS FOUNDERS KEEP PERSONAL TOUCH WITH THE BANDS COVERED AND OFFER A PERSONAL LOOK INTO A SCENE THAT’S OFTEN MISREPRESENTED BY THE REST OF THE WORLD.

Fueled by his passion for photography, a young Danny Krug conceptualized 1.21 Gigawatts back in the fall of 2011.  Nearly two years later he’s fought his way to the front and is now looking at distribution channels outside of his locale.  It’s this bottom-up story of success that channels interest in the music being produced from the hard working trough of society and compels young artists to continue on their creative paths in opposition to what mainstream culture wants of them.

The original print run, back in the summer of 2012, a long long time ago, was a lonely 1,000 copies.  But for a group interested in distributing in only once place, Brooklyn, this worked just fine — Krug, Johnson and Gigawatts immediately became a home-town staple based on their willingness to sacrifice quantity for quality.  That was the initial success of the zine, from day one, it looked completely professional.  Professionally printed and professionally written- no matter how unprofessional some of its content was.  The level of care that was put into the project showed how deeply appreciated the musicians were, even if it was just by the twenty people that showed up for the set.

And this was the return to localized music.  Because all over the world there must be tiny start-ups not unlike Gigawatts where honest writers put their fingers to the keyboard in hopes of breaking ground on a new sensation.  This was only a transitional theory as dictated by their own personal love for the music, an effort that lacks much reward besides that warm fuzzy feeling you get for “doing the right thing” which in this case was pursuing truthful expression.

Expression is what Krug and his co-founder are all about.  With their new offices headquartered in the Bogart Building, we’re looking at a new generation of the magazine, although one wonders what the next step in authenticity really is.  It’s a new generation that boasts all the resources that a photo studio and the general good feelings that having your first office can provide.

Free to do whatever he wants, cover whoever he wants and ultimately publish whatever he wants, Krug funds the zine by hosting shows at venues around the city — something that comes naturally after running 171 Lombardy.  1.21 Gigawatts is the whole package, presented perfectly.  From the printed content to the shows, everything is done with heart and that’s what really counts (oh yes).  Keep your eyes open for this summer’s 2-day Gigawatts festival at the Silent Barn for the one year anniversary in July. @Dingusonmusic

Vacant Admiral EP [Grey Visions]

Jack Phinney is back as Grey Visions while taking time between Jean Jackets sets to deliver the Vacant Admiral EP, another delicate acoustic album that relies on the clever layering of parts.  The ethereal capacity of the album is something that’s always been present in Phinney’s work- though it seems to come more fully into clarity with this release. [Free Download] @Dingusonmusic

Heeney Gets Naked for the Fans

The other night, Mark Fletcher and Max Kagan from Heeney got naked on stage at their show.  Shocking? Probably not for these two if you know them well but I’m sure there were some slack jaws in the audience.  The band cultivates a punk rock image that can be traced through their entire existence- right down to… getting naked for the better part of a set.  It’s only upward on the intensity scale from here, it wont be long before we’re all having shit flung at us.  @Dingusonmusic

Single Release: My Body is Dumb [The Great American Novel]

The Great American Novel is a powerhouse rock band from homefield Brooklyn.  The chorus’ consist of some of the most single handedly catchy and melodic lines, dredging up a deep well of influencers.  Well, ‘My Body is Dumb‘ is no different, in fact it’s the track that finally convinced me of their “powerhouse” status- leading up to the release of their next LP, slotted for any day now (this spring). Dead Ass [Lil Kids]

Brooklyn rap conman Adam Kane and production prodigy Nick Adams are back again, this time- with a new sound for Dead Ass.  It’s a rap album that samples (and often uses live recorded) rock elements flawlessly, without sounding forced, without sounding like a gimmick.  At least half of these tracks you’ve heard live if you’ve been existing in the Brooklyn DIY sphere, especially if you’ve been attending our shows.  Lil Kids does it again, and I know what I’m riding the subway to for the next few weeks. BREAKING NEWS-newsiteMy dear Dingus readers, it’s been nearly two years on the same platform and it’s about time you got something alittle… prettier.  We gave coding ourselves a shot a few weeks ago, but stopped when Sean Helling decided to join the staff and take our designs to the next level.  This July we’ll be releasing a new website along side an ad campaign, traveling web series and kickstarter.  We’ve got quite a few projects in the works thanks to a small anonymous investment and it’s all for you.  Stay with us and get ready for the next level of International DIY representation.  @Dingusonmusic

Single Release: Feeling Right [Happy Lives]

It’s a smart song. Despite our previous ambitions, Happy Lives has released a single that strays so far from their original sound that you might wonder if its a joke in entirety.  What it lacks: 1. The intense machine sound brought on by the sampling, 2. The complex layering of synth layers, 3. Lande’s signature rock shout.  It’s a demonstration of aesthetic prowess.  ’Feeling Right‘ reaches new levels of conceptual thought in the bands embryonic career.  Without regard for their previous EP, Beel, (Beale) Lande and Holbrook have crafted a track that leaves a singular question on the tip of your tongue- what next?  I didn’t think I’d be posting today as I run from meeting to meeting in preparation for the coding of our new website, but this couldn’t wait.  ’Feeling Right’ will either be remembered as a pinacle moment of clarity that lead to a diverse career, or a stand alone flop that stuck out like a deformity in an otherwise homogeneous discography.
