Welcome back. Let’s get Physical is now our customary Friday column. This week, I’ll be focusing on two LPs that the Dingus staff received in the mail recently. Dead Stars is a local Brooklyn rock outfit that I was first introduced to while tending the bar at Muchmore’s. The Bilinda Butchers are representing the west coast this week out of San Fran. The comparisons are thin, the differences vast- two vinyls, let’s…
Break the Tide by Dead Stars (Brooklyn, New York)
Break the Tide is an LP that you’ll only get to listen to if you get yourself physical. Although their bandcamp provides a good look, it’s this full LP that truly delivers the bands aesthetic in full. Pulling out the glowing red vinyl and plopping it onto the turn table, the needle finds the groove and, as the listener, you are immediately sucked into a rock and roll ballad that rarely breaks charge as the tracks roll by and you find yourself flipping to side B, invigorated. The title track leads. As you move through ‘Fade Away’, ‘What it is’ and ‘Slow Motion’, you are climbing a hill that continues to expand with minimal gimmick. Topped off with ‘The Black Swan’, Break the Tide worms its way into your soul with some of the good old pulsing garage structures that painted childhood.
Goodbyes by The Bilinda Butchers (San Francisco, California)
San Francisco’s brightly lit pop EP begins with one of the most sarcastically titled songs passing through our pages. If the combination of the words ‘Teen’ and ‘Dream’ haven’t been beaten to death than the Bilinda Butchers did it right here with their melodically superior gaze. Goodbyes is a record for the fading summer. Although New York City is engulfed in a well heated October (I knew global warming was good for something), the fact is, winter is coming and the Butchers just can’t seem to let go. The EP holds a repetative timbre that transcends the pop hooks, the parts that initially draw you in, for more layered, composed tectonics. By the end ‘Little Leaf’ let’s you go, remembering the cyclical nature of living and looking forward to the next warmly toned moment. The album, although more digestible in its physical form, is available for free download via the groups bandcamp.
