The Metal Microscope [#3]

So one of the bands I’ve liked on Facebook shared this song over the weekend and the brutality contained within these three and a half minutes is just unmatchable. Infant Annihilator is an internet band from the good ole UK and they have redefined aural wreckage since their April 2012 inception.  ’Decapitation Fornication’ starts with some blistering deathcore vocals, the guitars are absolutely thundering, and the vocals are like lightning. After a minute of this wall of noise, the song then evolves into a breakdown that showcases some of the ridiculous vocal screams that this band is capable of.  Take particular note of the lyric “The engraver to the creek bed that marks your resting place” at 1:04. He draws out the ‘resting place’ for 13 seconds, its incredible. A little solo spurts in here before spinning back into the breakdown, which restarts the song at the 2 minute mark. The pace of the song accelerates through the end exploding with the lyrics of “I exist To rid the world of throbbing cysts, I drain the pus Embedded in society.”  The pummeling of guitars and drums remind me of a mixture of Whitechapel and a really fast Meshuggah, and even a little bit like Shadow of the Colossus, a band I featured last week.

‘Decapitation Fornication’ by Infant Annihilation (Hessle, UK)

In other fun news, Infant Annihilator recently posted to Facebook that we should look forward to an early December LP release. So get stoked for that, I’m curious to see what sixteen of these songs sound like. Facebook contains a little information on the upcoming album.

“Their ‘Debut’ 16-track album entitled The Palpable Leprosy of Pollution is a concept album about the Catholic Church and the corruption behind closed doors. The album covers issues such as: child rape, murder and mass programming. All of this is seen through the eyes of a delusional priest who participates in all these acts.”

Car Bomb is a local Brooklyn based band that just released a 12-track album yesterday in a DIY manner. Car Bomb is one of the most elusive metal bands I’ve ever heard. You can’t quite stick them in one genre, and the sound is all over the place. This music is limitless. Its unconventional, it goes beyond the bounds of normal metal. It continually surprises you. There are a lot of weird noises, screams, whoops, growls, ‘zips’, and the vocalist never follows the same pattern for more than a short verse(read: one word or two, maybe three). This album Car Bomb has on bandcamp called w^w^^w^w is a real journey to listen to. I mean, I’m used to all the tropes and styles of metal out there, and this music is truly unique, it’s a huge mixture of guitar rifts. Car Bomb might be a strong name, but it fits the style of this music so well.

Now I was lucky enough to catch Car Bomb earlier this year at a Gojira concert in Manhattan on 8/09/12 at Santos Party House. The stage looked crazy, but then again, I’ve never been to Santos before. I’ll describe it quick, it was a 40-50 foot long hall with bars on either side, and these huge columns along the middle, maybe 6 of them.   Staff were barreling through the crowd with 30-racks of beers, they have a serious supply chain problem there. The stage was shrouded in white smoke and 4 big vertical lighting units that stood around the band on the stage emitted bright intense green, blue, and red lights.  They were flashing along to the music and were done pretty well.  It was definitely worth watching.  But no one moshed for Car Bomb. Listening to this music now, I can see why, it doesn’t have repeatable melodies or rifts, so you are too confused to dance or feel the need to move(they were also the opener and although they are local, few there probably had heard of them).  It was much more of a show worth observing. These guys put so much effort into their music. How the vocalist wasn’t exhausted at the end of each song was unbelievable alone.

That wraps up the two bands I have for you this week. Listen to Car Bomb’s full LP at their bandcamp, and get excited for Infant Annihilator’s new album in December. @MetalMicroscope
